The 2012 iMac came with 8GB... and apple still thinks in 2022... 8GB is enough memory. This is called planned obsolesce.

I always have 10-20 tabs open on Chrome with a 2015 base MacBook Pro with no issues.

Dont' want to use my work computer as, well, it's a WORK computer. And I prefer a computer over a phone for nearly anything.

Entirely different architecture. Most reviewers say the 8GB model is more than enough ram for the average person buying this with apple's new m series processors.

Not on macOS it doesn't… this is an arm64 architecture chip and macOS is extremely efficient at allocating system resources.

It takes forever to boot up but my 13" 2012 MacBook Pro still works decently, it cost between 1,200 to 1,400 and I'd say it was a pretty good investment. This newer one for cheaper is a no brainer if you're in the market. I'm not in the market but am on the fence. Kinda feel like I'd barely use it after working on a computer all day for work.

Different strokes for different folks. I haven't filled half of my 256GB SSD and barely over half of my 128GB SSD on my iPhone. I do think that over time 512GB will be the baseline, but for some folks it simply isn't needed (yet). Similar to iPhone 14 vs SE - there's a market for both and that's why they sell both (in multiple different SSD sizes).

I'm guessing (?), trying not to assume, but guessing you are using Chrome on an Intel-based machine? If so, I recommend taking a look at the updates Google made to Chrome to run natively on Apple's M series chips and it's increased efficiency. Chrome was known to be a memory hog on older, Intel-based Macs and even those using Rosetta/Rosetta2. But optimized for M1/M2 I doubt you'd see the same memory usage with the laptop in question/on sale here.

Nope, since you asked. I had the m1 MacBook air for about a year, mostly for mobile work since I have desktop at home, bought November last year. At first things were doing great, I have twenty or thirty tabs open and no problem. Ram is about 5gb and computer stays cool, no fan so no noise either. Great. As time passed, various updates and daily usage. The ram take continues to grow. I am running latest version m1 chrome with youtube AdBlock, honey plugin and bypass paywall. If I am running my normal workload of around ten to twenty tabs, between Google doc, Google sheet, stock, slickdeals, and other miscellaneous websites the computer ram is at full load with 4 to 5 gb swap memory. The computer also heats up significantly if running for a few hours. While the CPU usage is only around 30%. of course we all know chrome ram optimization has never been great but since I use chrome on a daily basis I have no choice but to accept it. Therefore I have concluded the bottleneck to this machine is ram and heat. Which is why 16gb and active fan is what I want in my next laptop.
