The 2012 iMac came with 8GB... and apple still thinks in 2022... 8GB is enough memory. This is called planned obsolesce.

Not really a deal at this price point. The 13' Macbook Pro M1 is $100 more, and you get built-in fan, 1 extra core, brighter screen, better speakers, touchbar (which I personally find useful) and longer battery life. Overall it just feels like a more premium product

I've restored many systems over the years -- with external drives and backup apps like CCC. That remains the safest system backup method. Time Machine cannot restore that way.

Unfortunately, this is the end of the road. While the original tiny iPhone SE was able to hold on for iOS 15, the upcoming iOS 16 will drop the 2016 iPhone SE from support along with any other device sporting a chip older than Apple's A10. Jun 6, 2022

I understand that but I still don't get why it isn't completely dead yet? For examples:

YouTube, Google Maps and other productivity apps for exampleS don't require me to update to iOS 16.

I can still send and receive text message.

I can still use safari.

LTE is still available to use.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what define dead or insupportable ☹️

Essentially unsupported. Your apps will continue to work, but new versions may require newer iterations of the OS over time. No new OS features, decreasing usability and security.

100% spot on. The machine will be lickety split fast right up until it starts swapping RAM to SSD, and then it's going to heat up and slow down. ARM may be easier to implement efficient code and low power consumption etc., but the folks who think it's somehow a new paradigm in computing which obviates the need for RAM or even substantially reduces the need for RAM are missing the boat.

If you're a light user who doesn't even know how much RAM you use on a normal basis and you have 5 tabs open, you're going to do just fine. But if you're coming from a power user perspective and currently use a laptop with 32GB or more RAM (as I am), these little M1 laptops are complete non-starters.

I'm not anti-Apple. I have two intel mac mini's (with upgraded RAM), several iPhones, an apple TV, airpods, blah blah blah. I'd like to try an m1 machine - but they haven't made one suitable for my needs yet.

256gb is still doable if it has an sd slot. I.e. most windows computers.

I've been doing fine on my dell xps 256gb ssd with a 128 gb sd card.

You're getting down votes, but you're not wrong. Batterygate was a thing. Apple was fined close to a billion dollars in total for the planned obsolescence of iPhones because of lower than expected new phone sales. All their devices have been moving more and more towards planned obsolescence and reduced repairability. Their M Series chips are pretty impressive, but Apple is probably the single most anti-consumer tech company in the world.

Their products retain value better than most other brands though. I think observed market data is better than opinion.

I'm not very techy, but my spouse and I purchased a Sony 4K video camera a while back when we found out we were having a baby. We tried transferring content to an older MAC and the graphics were terrible. Made me wonder why I spent so much on a good camera.

Would this computer be okay for creating 4K movies? I could save the movies on a separate memory card so memory isn't a huge issue for me. Would be nice not having to pay more than double for MabBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip, which of course Apple recommended to me. Thanks!
