I bought these at Costco about a month ago at their regular price. They are nicely constructed and the leash is super long and extends/retracts very smoothly. They were a good deal at regular price and are a no-brainer at the current price. In for 1.

I'm an emergency veterinarian. We refer to these as 'hit by car' leashes as we invariably see cases where the owner fails to lock the leash at intersections or it simply fails.

In addition, you have no control over your pet if they're over 10 feet away from you. If an off-leash aggressive dog runs and attacks your dog, that's extra ground you need to to cover in order to intervene.

Standard recommendation is to use a 6' well constructed leash for the most amount of control of your pet.

I have used extended leashes to allow my dog to roam while under a controlled state (assumed product intended design). Is this wrong? Do you mind sharing examples of bad habits? Respectfully.

Never thought that this type of leash can have negative statistics. I guess if ones dog has a habit of running across a street is an indicator of high risk dog. Any other indicators of high risk dogs? I guess because dogs maybe for the most part have no inkling of the crossing the streets cautionary rule that anything is possible given an unfortunate timing. For example, look at the drivers eyes to see if they actually see you when attempting to cross the street. Thank you for sharing.
I live in a major city and retractable leashed are often the bane of my dog walks. Bad dog habits are also bad owner habits, so not only can a dog run across the street, but they can stop in the street, go back to the street, approach another dog too fast, approach before another owner has a chance to warn, etc. A good use of such a leash is dog parks, or open fields, where dogs don't have dangers that require split second reaction times. I often see them used with bigger friendly dogs, or small dogs. Big friendlies are great but my dog is an old grump, and he'll walk right past while I end up tangled in the leash. Small dogs... Well, without being overly critical, small dogs in my neighborhood often have nonchalant pet parents. Ruby might be too small to do real damage, but it is so frustrating to have tiny yip-yaps running up and barking like they own the place when my dog is just trying to potty at 7am.

Let me stop. The leash itself isn't a problem, it's like most things, human carelessness or inattentiveness can cause issues for their own pets and others.

Good advice but I'm pretty sure this more applies to the dumb ass dog owners. We've all seen them, letting their pets run up into peoples yards or other dogs without caution. I have an extension and I'm also aware of my surroundings. Like driving a car and not riding up on somebody's ass. Urban people might heed this warning but people who are spread out in the burbs can use this if responsible. But the bottom line is most don't or aren't willing to put the time in to train their animal.

Where I won't shoot another animal I will protect mine by any means. Anyone who let's their animal run rampant in any situation where there's other dogs has zero care for you, their dog or any other animal. In short, those owners can fo. Those defending those owners can also fo.

Having a bad day, are we?

Does this use a small rope like leash or a strap?

As someone that knows how bad these leashes are....do not buy. I'm not one for government telling me what to buy and not buy, but these should be illegal.

Dogs should heel, and only stop to pee once or twice, or you can't call it a "walk."

Retractable leash encourage dog to pull. Because they constantly walk with pressure on the leash. They learn that leash pressure is okay.

Actually I think I can train a dog to walk without pulling using a retractable leash. However I would never use a retractable leash as I don't like a variable length leash, especially controlled mechanically. And they seem gangly. I like the six foot heavy duty leash with a good loop and a good clip. I can control the length so easily with a plain leash and my dog responds well with both verbal and visual hand commands so the basic leash gives me a lot of flexibility and ease of use.

Only people teach dogs bad habits, not leashes.
