With the flight cancellation/delay situation going on, it's very easy to need to make adjustments to your hotel stay. Prepay sites like Expedia offer zero flexibility so a 20% savings could cause you to lose much more. It's a gamble and YMMV.

Source: me who got screwed by Expedia when my flight was cancelled last minute and I couldn't reach my destination for 2 days.

I find it really depends on the circumstances - for example, if I'm staying in a big urban city with tons of hotels on a weeknight/non-holiday, there are going to be a ton of surplus rooms all over town. Using Hotwire, Priceline, etc where you get a deep discount but it doesn't disclose the hotel, you will save some serious dollars; and you can in fact filter down to what you're looking for (or even figure out the exact hotel, by looking at the ratings/reviews and matching).

If it's a weekend, holiday or just generally always busy tourist destination - that's when I'm booking direct, using hotel credit cards to gain or redeem points, etc and maximize those values. Just my advice, take it or leave it! :-D

Just pay more for fully refundable rate. They all have that option.

After using Expedia for years, I ran into this situation this spring. Flight was delayed to the next day. Chatted with Expedia and tried to get them to cancel the hotel and they canceled my entire trip instead. Well, everything except the hotel that I wasn't going to make it to. They tried to say they couldn't contact the hotel because they were "closed", and when I called the hotel they told me I needed to cancel through Expedia.

Expedia reps were absolutely useless and I refuse to use them ever again - even for the points I have accumulated.

Before covid, I got a sweet hotel in Tokyo for less than $600 for the week on Expedia, so it was totally worth it. I'd still use Expedia if the price is right and if I'm driving to my destination.
