Just no
Bought these knives a couple of months ago and I hate them; first of all the stainless steel is painted which i only noticed while unboxing, the gray paint is supposed to prevent food from sticking to the knives but it does not, plus aesthetically it looks like crap since the paint lines are not precise and bleed over to the handles on most of the knives. The self sharpening block definitely does not work because in the two months that I've used them they've already dulled significantly, and I can't sharpen them with my sharpener or stones because of the lame paint that's on them. Also one of the knives does not fit well in the block. they will be going back to Costco very soon, i do not recommend these at all.
I think people are missing the point of this deal or maybe I'm just confused. It's $40 folks for a complete knife set. Obviously these aren't going to be the greatest thing since 'sliced' bread (pun intended). I'd argue for $40 you won't be able to find a better set. Sure you could go buy a better set, or preferably piece out individual quality knives as typically recommended. Those are going to cost $100's to $1,000's. This will suite people who are not professionals or purists just fine. Will they last a lifetime? Absolutely not, but then show me a knife set for $40 that will.
Great price but some bad reviews about being painted 😑

Got these delivered a few days ago. Knives are absolutely great for the price. The block has a crack in it that looks to be mended/repaired, which is odd. But no complaints at all about the knives, especially for well under $100. Hand wash and keep them dry and they will last a very long time.

Costco is more like a bick & mortar version of kickstarer where they experiment with crap products on their members.

um. tell me you've never been to Costco without actually saying you've never been to Costco.

You can keep these for 1-2 years then just toss them and buy another set for what you'd pay someone to sharpen them anyway (or the value of your time to DIY). That's not my method but I think it's a practical alternative to maintain a decent set of knives for ordinary household use.

I was looking to replace my ancient farberware knife set. Thought this $40 should be ok for my needs.

After reading the reviews and comments here, I think I will invest the $40 towards a sharpening stones and just sharpen my existing farberware set and see how that works out.

Is it just me that's concerned about "SharpIN" function. I wouldn't want metal dust in food if someone accidentally forgets washing knife thoroughly.
Yeah, that doesn't really seem like a plus in this case. Those auto-sharpeners actually work okay, but combined with knives that are coated for any reason (Cusinart paints theirs for the gaudy colors), that's not a good mix. That dust has to go somewhere. In addition to that, once it starts wearing off, it can tend to flake at the edge and start coming off while you are using the knife. This stuff is probably tested as non-toxic, but it's an unnecessary risk IMO. Hollow-edged knives are your best bet to prevent sticking anyway unless you have the scratch to shell out for those high end concave Japanese blades.

Sharpening knives was the "pandemic" hobby that I picked up. It's easy to get started, there's plenty of instruction available and it's kind of zen to spend a little while getting a knife all sharpened up.

I got them as a backup for my main set. I really only needed the steak knives.

But I would absolutely NOT want these as my main set or my lifetime set. I'm a buy it for life person, I look for the slickest deal long term. I wasn't going to come back to this thread, but I saw it reposted on the FP. I like the set, but it's not anywhere close to good steel that I'd keep longer than a couple years.

Agreed. I have an odd assortment of knives by Dalstrong, Wusthoff and Zwilling, and they will last as long as you let them last you (meaning proper care and maintenance).

Or buy NSF commercial kitchen knives and call it a day.
I personally would not put a knife in a dishwasher but NSF rated knives supposedly must be able to withstand that. The 10" Russell chef's knife that Costco sell 2/$18 are NSF rated and, having used one, I'm pretty sure they'd hold up to that. Crazy value in those knives; they easily take and keep an edge and are super easy to use and maintain. My use is light household so I can't say for sure, but they look like they're made for food service and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they could stand up to that.

I think these are freaking awesome. My friends who are chefs are impressed by the sharpness.
