True, but the one in the OP is Made In USA. That's a good thing.

This is made in the US, so if you are the type of person that says more things should be made in the states, this is one of those things. I would not buy another if you have one though.

This may come across as a really dumb question but if you already own one of these......will this work equally as effectively on screws (wood screws etc) instead of bolts?

That is a good theory. But I think you are missing a few things.

There are the nuts and bolts you see a lot...and those that you may see only a couple of times....ever. The expense of keeping that many trays of nuts and bolts...some of which you will rarely ever use....will far outprice this.
Think that is an exaggeration? Keep in mind...you will not only need to keep all the sizes and all the thread patterns....you will also need to keep all the lengths of bolts....unless you are suggesting to keep an entire wall of nuts/bolts..just for measuring.

Then there is the case that most people use nuts and bolts they have...of some sizes. And probably will not replace them until they run out.

And if you have kids, I can promise you that the sizes will get a little mixed up.

And that's just off the top of my head.

BTW....instead of trying to spin this entire string around a nut/bolt....why not just spin the nut/bolt in question into the counterpart until you find a match?
Nope. You don't have to keep all the lengths. You are falsely equating having the right length bolt on hand (having all lengths) with having 1 or more length of that width/thread size for being able to determine the appropriate size (which is all that this device does). I don't need a 5" bolt to figure out what the correct bolt size I need to replace the 5" one. If my 1" test bolt threads fine, my size is determined and either way you're ordering a longer bolt to replace it

Note that I specifically said fixed bolts/nuts when mentioning spinning the entire wire. Obviously if it's a loose bolt/nut you are fitting you can spin it freely into this device just as easily as you can walk over to your tray of assorted bolts/nuts and spin it into them very easily.

I don't know, maybe keep your bolts and nuts away from your kids? This seems like it would be a problem for the hardware you keep on hand despite having this product or not. If they are young enough to mess them up, you probably shouldn't have them in unsupervised reach anyways so they don't try eating them? 👀

Why do you need to know the thread/pitch in wood screws? I don't work with wood a lot so I'm genuinely curious.

Screws typically do not go into nuts, so the threading usually does not matter as much nor does it need to be matched so specifically. So you don't really need to worry about that

Wood screws have very different threading than bolts. A product like this would not be helpful for those.

If you can't remember and are uncertain of which bin you *just* grabbed the bolt/nut from, you could merely spin it into the corresponding nut/bolt in your set as confirmation in addition to visually comparing it to the other ones in that bin.

If you used a specific size to which you are out of a particular bolt/nut size in one of those kits then, let's be real, that kit has already paid for itself and you need to restock that particular size anyways.
One of the Amazon reviews mentions that one can always cut the cable and store the pieces however works best.
That would let you have the thread checker that will fit nearly anywhere a random nut will, and the thread checker has the size and pitch stamped, so no issues about misfiling.
Best of both worlds if you find having the checker tethered to be too much of a problem.

Well..I think that I can keep the 11 y/o from eating them. The 20 y/o might be a tougher fight.
It is cute that you think only small kids would mix them up. One day, if you have kids, you will understand. Wave

As far as needing a sizing for a fixed nut/bolt.....uh.....is it not already in use?
Maybe take it off first?
And so that we are clear...your plan to beat this...is an entire wall of loose nuts and bolts in trays.......uh....sure

It has a USA patent and says country of origin is US... but that doesn't mean it was completely manufactured in the USA. They could be sourcing all the parts from China or wherever and assembling them in a warehouse with 3 workers who keep the robot machines filled with parts.

Or it was made and assembled in China and they add their patent tag to it.
Their website [swmanufacturing.com] says "Made in USA". Which, according to the FTC [ftc.gov]:
"Made in USA" means that "all or virtually all" the product has been made in America. That is, all significant parts, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin.

I bought one of these (different brand) in order to organize the two large tubs (25 lbs) of assorted hardware I've accumulated over several decades. It took a whole afternoon, but now I have all my nuts and bolts organized by size in specific bins.

Seriously, if you go looking for specific nuts and bolts from your stash often, having everything sorted makes a HUGE difference in both time and enjoyment of your project.

This was time and money very well spent for me.

I'm asking about screws for this because often I need to use plastic wall plugs when fixing something into dry wall and I always have a challenge matching a screw to a dry wall anchor. If anyone has any tips on that (besides just trying screwing the screw into the anchor) then I would love to hear your experience.

Good price, I have this myself, while it's far from my most used tools, it's definitely a nice thing to have handy.
What is it for?

If you ever try to find the exact difference between an M8-1.25 and a 5/16-18 , (or oddly a M12-1.75 and a 1/2-13 like I was fiddling with today) you will know the difference in these tools.

Personally, where it's made doesn't matter as much as precision. But in this case, the US made version is more precise than the other knock offs out there. . . I've tried several. Lol.

Now, you can get extreme precision versions, but they have extreme price tags.

So, saying " ___ is better because it's made in the US" makes no difference at all in tool quality. I've seen many high and low quality items come out of every country. But in this case it's true. And it's a great value compared to others that are only a couple dollars less.
