I consider that a bonus. Ice Makers seem to be the first thing to go out, and it can affect the rest of the fridge's operation.

Only unknown to particular people. This company has been quite decent for about four decades plus.

also, I know I sound elitest, but I don't really want to take my chances with a used refrigerator. I'm cool with a new one.

No worse than gambling with a Samsung Appliance I'd argue.
Anyone who has had a Samsung fridge probably knows what I'm talking about...

Anyhow, this one... you can get a 5 year protection plan for it for $75, which is... 15% of the price of the fridge? Eh... not terrible.

I'd be on the fence on this personally, but the price and features are attractive.

I didn't, until mine stopped working. Fixed it then a few months later the fridge started tripping the breaker. Unplugged ice maker and now it's just a waste of space.

Yeah these days I just get an external. I get one of the ones that's about ~$100, get a protection plan for it, then in about 2 years or less the ice maker goes out. Redeem protection plan, get gift card, get a new one with another protection plan, repeat.

You can also get a fancier one if you want to spend the money. Like one of those Opal ice makers, heh.

I have a Follett that recently went out, one of the bearing assemblies I think. Can't afford to replace it 😔

Is there enough room for ice trays in the bottom?

In this fridge? I couldn't say... Looking at it though...

So it's a bottom freezer fridge, which says it's 5 Cu. Ft... and if you look at the fourth image on Amazon, it shows the freezer being a two-tier sliding drawer system. I like the roller-slide drawers for bottom freezers but they also aren't that great for ice cube trays, but they should work fine as long as you're careful not to slosh your ice cube trays when you close it.

If you're really into doing ice trays... I guess looking it: You could do ice trays on the top drawer, and then use the bottom drawer/basket to store your frozen stuff.

Honestly a lot of the $100-range ice makers are mostly the same. There's differences here and there, but very little is different. All of them, when they go out, usually has the sensor, or maybe the compressor goes out.

I usually just go with price and reviews. So, last one I purchased was this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B097S54...tails&th=1

~$110 after $10 coupon, has 14,000 reviews, roughly 4 and a half stars. So at the very least it functions. Note that there's an "Add a Protection Plan" option for a 5 year plan for $10.85.

Make sure to keep the plan details somewhere because almost all of these, when used every day, all the time, are going to go out within 2 years. One thing you'll notice is the ice will sometimes build up on the edge of the tray and hit the sensor, leaving part of the tray unfilled. So occasionally if you're walking by you might take the scoop and push some ice to the other side.

The sensor is some sort of optical sensor. Sometimes you need to wipe down the sensor and the black rubber nub across from it. It gets worse over time until it gives out, and then I replace it and get my protection plan back as a gift card.

You can also spend real money on something like a GE Opal ice maker; or some other larger ice maker. These cheap ones that I just get replaced though work well enough so I haven't felt the need to upgrade.
