The base game is great when you're starting out, but all of the expansions are really worthwhile and add some good depth. You'll need to play the base game when you have friends who don't know the game come by and want to play because the expansions add a ton of complexity to a game that's already fairly complex for newbies. The nice thing about Carcassonne is that it's really good to play as a couple although admittedly it has more depth when there are more than two.

It is tempting to buy this as I currently have the winter edition that is not compatible with the expansions. Of course, that will push me to buy some of those too and I am running out of space for all our board games.
