it's ok, honestly this has been out for over 6 years and surprised it isn't going for $400 now

Age in the camera world isn't really an indication on if it is good or bad. Also used camera prices have been going up over the past year.

I have a canon M50 which is nice and small but seems like Canon abandoned the EF-M mount so I'd like to move over to something small with zoom lens options. Not many players in the small DSLR space I think..

Would you be able to point me in the direction of a decent starter camera in the 5-600, range? Been thinking about getting my gf a camera for Xmas and have no idea what to look for in a camera.

Any suggestions welcome from anyone
Thanks.

This is a hard question because there are so many camera out there for different uses. What do you intend to use it for mainly? What is your price? What features? etc.

What is her main use for the camera? This is totally fine if she is leisurely shooting but not something for let's say weddings or sporting events. Honestly I prefer canon as they have a good, rugged feel and natural image. go for the canon rebel t7. it can be had for $450 with a basic 18-55mm lens.

I would suggest buying used for a starter camera. I personally grabbed a canon t5i off of Facebook. I wanted the swivel viewfinder for vlogging. But I wound up getting very invested with lenses, learning about taking better photos etc... If you can, try and find the shutter count... Although most people have a hard time knowing where to find the info. But do some research, save some money IMO

This is not very good if you mainly shoot still images rather than videos. No in-body stabilization, no weather sealing.

This is a pretty good cam I paid $900 years ago. I used it as a C cam after unlocking the unlimited time recording. I've made serious money with it shooting wedding video to event photography. I no longer use it for pro work.

The problem with the Panasonic cameras has been their auto focus, particularly when shooting video. I bought the G85, which is 1 step up from the G7, to use for twitch streaming. It works great as long as it's in manual focus.

Sometimes if I move forward or backward in my chair, it would try to autofocus and completely lose me, and "give up" which leaves me out of focus until I manually readjust. There are lots of YouTube videos on the issue and Panasonic refuses to fix it.

Im surpised its not going for less than that. G7 Doesnt even have IBIS. I got a used GX85 for like $300 and it was in excellent condition. Panasonic cams seem to hold their value, but i woudlnt pay $400 for this, I'd rather get the Olympus version on the used or refurb market cause you get far more features unless you really need beyond 20/30 minute video takes.
