All true but it's just marketing to make people think they are missing out if they don't buy the newest version. The reality is...

1) Only specific manufacturers have adopted HDR10+ because it requires a royalty. Also, in addition to having an HDR10+ capable TV, and the 2022 ATV, you also have to be watching a channel that offers programming in HDR10+. That's a lot of "ifs," that I'm guessing apply to a not a huge % of TV streamers.

2) A15 processor is only going to be "felt" when, or I should say, if, playing iTunes games. The A12 in the 2021 ATV remains plenty fast to quickly scroll up and down, open and load channel apps. But also, so many ATV channel apps are just poorly built it just won't matter in this aspect.

3) "a few years down the road" is irrelevant in 2022. In a 2-3 years ATV will either have been replaced and heavily discounted. Who knows, an M1 version might be out with WiFI 6E or 7. There simply is no need to rush in to buy one now if you can't take advantage of the A15 or HDR 10+ today.

4) "The new box is also lighter and runs cooler." Honestly the "lighter" part is surely a gag on Apple's part. Weight is irrelevant to the ATV -- whether it weights 7.5oz or 15oz who cares. It's a set top box not a tablet or phone. And I've never experienced ATV getting so hot that it had to shut down or that the fan was so noisy it interfered with my viewing. Heck, I didn't even realize it had a fan until the 2022 was featured as fan-less. And honestly, I'd rather have a small, silent cooling fan to move around air.

5) As others have noted the "low end" 2022 model strips out Ethernet and Thread support. If you want that it's another $30 or so.
I prefer more weight so a stiff cable doesn't move it.

Impact?
For me this means I can't get native lossless audio from my movie collection via Plex. I have to also have a nVidia Shield hooked up in order to get my movies audio to run correctly.

Ok so am I the only person who is frustrated that the Apple TV can't change the input on your TV? The Fire TV and nVidia shield can do this without issue... How am I the only person talking about this?

Edit: ok I don't mind the thumbs down and I never address it, but I sort of want to understand in this case. Are other people not having this issue? Are people just so complacent that they are ok with having to juggle remotes? How do you handle it?

This is for Samsung tv owners or ppl who want to game on a streaming device? 😳This is a very odd release after a long awaited gen 2 and gen 2 is more than plenty fast.

Only 5$ off MSRP. I would wait to see if a BF deal turns up... these should be closer to $99 on sale.

All the large US retailers and most of the online electronics specialty stores have these in stock or available for pre-order with estimated shipping in the next week or so.

Also don't forget that the 4k 3rd gen 64GB model is Wifi only.... have to move up to the 4k 3rd Gen 128GB model to get wired ethernet.
no it wont. Quit pulling prices out your butt

When my Apple TV wakes up, it changes the tv source automatically. So I'll be watching over the air tv or whatever, press a button on the Apple TV remote, and in 2 seconds the tv switches input. When I turn my tv on with the Apple TV remote, it automatically chooses Apple TV. If I turn on tv with the tv remote it goes to over the air because the apple tv source is off. Works great for me.

I have the apple tv 2nd gen with older aluminum remote. Samsung 4K tv from like 2019(?). There are Samsung settings to allow for input wake up and auto select. And maybe an apple tv setting to send signal.

Nono, I'm not having issues getting the TV to change to the Apple TV. It's when you want to switch inputs from AppleTV to something else. Not all devices have CEC so you have to manually change inputs.

I bought this to replace my Roku express. I don't game nor is my home wired for Ethernet. This will work perfectly with the 2 HomePod minis I just bought from Target (another SlickDeal/$80 each).

Thanks OP!

Wanted to mention that the 64GB model does NOT have an ethernet port. You can only connect via Wi-Fi. If you want ethernet, go with the 128GB.
Double the storage and Ethernet for $20 more. I don't know who the intended audience is for this model

Agree with this, I genuinely don't understand why they released the 2022 64GB version of this, it just makes things confusing for end users who don't follow along with the specs.
you answered your own question. confusing the casual consumer is a strategy. most consumer are clueless about what they're actually buying and how it compares to other models and whether they're losing or gaining in their actual purchase. imo, the most recent example of this is the 10th gen ipad.. it has no reason to exist other than to confuse casuals in making a poor purchasing decision.

Frankly this is just a lukewarm deal. Only $5 off regular price you can get anywhere. BestBuy, for example throws in 1 month of Fubi (World Cup is coming, remember?) and 4 months of Music, Arcade and TV+ subscriptions. If you utilize any of these, paying $5 extra is well worth it.

Unfortunately shipping is extra and for me it would be $5.65 extra which would no longer make it a deal
