I have the ideapad 5 pro 14 with the 5800u/vega 8. and i am actually pleasantly surprised by how good the overall laptop is. The only cons i can think of besides the soldered ram and single M.2 is the cheapish touchpad. OEM batteries are available but you will need to wait a month or 2 for ship.

For $700-800, everything in the laptop is well balanced imo. The display is EXCELLENT, build quality is excellent and has a better hinge than a majority of windows laptops, the connectivity is pretty average and external displays are limited to 1080/1440p 60 Hz (haven't tried 4k), but you can connect 2 external displays, the keyboard feels like butter, battery life is great (iGPU might be more efficient than mx450), it charges very quickly, and the speakers are surprisingly great despite being bottom facing.

And last of all the design is so sleek and elegant. Its like the lenovo legion "slimmest". Love lenovo's design language.
Vega graphics is a much better option (at this same price) than Nvidia MX 450 (which is garbage).

hmm yeah the MX450 may use additional resources/space and effectively cripple thermal performance and battery life but best see a review to confirm.

I'm pretty sure that the MX450 has its own ram, and therefore would allow your cpu to use your ram to its fullest. Also, MX gpus are not meant for gaming. MX450 is under 680m, but is way better than the Vega in the 5800u.

One of the USB c ports is a 2.0 and charging port only?
That does sound odd. I have a recent IdeaPad 5 (non-Pro), and it has the same USB configuration. I am pretty sure I get USB 3.0 speeds with an external SSD, but I can't test it right now. Does anyone know for sure?

It sounds like there are a lot of drawbacks to this configuration, though I like the higher-than-average resolution and some other specs.

Thinkpads are vastly superior to Ideapads. In fact, Ideapads are pieces of trash. Save yourself a headache and spend the extra buckaroos on a Thinkpad.
While I don't disagree with the assessments, this comment does not help anyone at all. Machines with the same specs have at least $200-300 price difference between ThinkPad and IdeaPad, which is significant for a drvice under $1K and is large enough to drive people to the lower class device. Also, market segmentation exists for a reason, and people look for different things in a product. To stretch your point a bit, I could say everyone should get a Macbook Pro 14" for $1,599 and nobody should get that crappy chromebook sold for $300 but nobody is going to cate about that, because this is useless purchase advice.

I'm confused by some of the comments here complaining about the graphical capabilities of this machine. Isn't this laptop not designed for you? I think it's quite obvious this machine targets a market of high end budget users in a school or office setting that may also want to do some light gaming.

I suppose I just don't understand the criticism. Like I would not be listening to a country album, angrily bellyaching about the lack of fresh rhymes and references to the socioeconomic plight of the urban minority.

I tried this laptop last year (about the same price). The fan was easily activated and was bothering me. I returned it mainly because of this. In contrast, the Lenovo Thinkpad T14s 5850u is so quiet even when the fan is on, which I kept. The other things that I observed were 1) four feet were not flat (only three touching a flat surface), and 2) the keyboard gave a cheap feeling.

If on budget, get this instead:

I bought a similar idea pad pro from Costco about 6mo ago.
Ryzen5600 with Radeon graphics. It was $650

It's fine- mainly used for basic web browsing and something separate from my work laptop.

I was looking at the MacBook Air but a similar spec was 1500 and I couldn't justify it

This is a nice laptop for $700. The people saying the parts are trash are spoiled and will direct you to a $1,200-$1,700 laptop in comparison. I have an MX150 and it's fine for light gaming. I'm sure the 450 is an improvement. The metal body of this laptop is high quality. This is perfect for someone who already has a decent desktop and does not need a desktop replacement laptop.

to be honest, if I have about 800 bucks, I would easily DIY a desktop (like 3 times stronger than this) for about 450 bucks, then still have money buy a cheap work laptop with similar power (check out Walmart Gateways laptops, I just bought this one :https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gatewa.../946771675
for $299
