Why does Slickdeals recommend Expedia?
"Slickdeals.net is a participant in the Expedia Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Expedia.com.
pay-per-sale: In this type of program, the merchant pays an affiliate when the affiliate sends a customer who makes a purchase. Some merchants pay the affiliate a fixed rate per sale while others, like Expedia, pay a percentage of the sale.
pay-per-click: In this arrangement, the affiliate is paid based on how many visitors arrive at the merchant's site via the affiliate link, and the affiliate is paid regardless of whether visitors make a purchase.
pay-per-lead: This type of program pays affiliates based on the number of visitors to the merchant's site who sign up as leads or fill out the requested information on the website."
In other words, it doesn't have to be a good deal or even a deal to get posted. Slickdeals is owned by Goldman Sachs and those links, pay-per-click, and affilate fees add up to a sizeable amount of money paid out by Expedia and others. Amazon is their biggest affiliate. That's why you will find the vast majority of posts from SD staff are for Amazon "no deal" items.

No complaints, in general, especially given how cheap the cruise was. Be aware that the Carnival Conquest seems to be one of their older ships. It's clean, but the pool is small and the water slides are a little short. Food is good, and the fees are all inclusive. We hit a storm the first day out, and the ship did sway some. Make sure you bring sea sickness medication if you're not sure if you get sea sick. The onboard store ran out of the medication that day.
Watch out for the additional fees, we purchased the Internet access and the Bubbles package (the soda package). The big fees are the shore excursions. Make sure you research on YouTube on what is worth going to.
All in all, it's a decent, cheap vacation. I think next time we'll go on a more modern ship that has more of everything (bigger pool, more entertainment, etc).

used by the OP likely means "travel between ports/destination" by ship and probably should have been stated as such for a group of people who obviously have never cruised before.
I've only used Expedia once because I didn't know better and found out afterwards I could have gotten the same or a better rate doing it myself - which ends up taking the exact same amount of time. AT the end of the day (and lots of traveling) a good travel agent is worth their weight in gold. ANd they are underpaid if they are actually "good"'
It is the taxes that will kill you. The taxes are just as much as the cruise or more!
I always book directly with the cruise line because I've heard horror stories about booking through 3rd party websites.

Their website says:
Upgrades are automatically assigned at the time of booking and are based on availability in like to like categories only (interior to interior, ocean view to ocean view and balcony to balcony).

hard pass it is then
FWIW and doesn't apply to this deal. 7 day cruise to Bahamas from NY if I remember looked like this. 3 days of straight sailing just to get there. 3 days of island hopping. 1 day to sail back (full speed ahead haha)

I'm considering using Costco travel to book a trip in the spring, would be the first time I've used a portal (Costco) to buy a cruise vs. the cruise proper, but I'd get 4% back and that's not a small amount of $$.

You are correct. NY would be a really convenient port for us BUT it takes a very long time to get anywhere - even the bahamas is like 3 days or so just to get there. I don't know that they even do longer cruises from NY that would allow you to reach the caribbean proper. On the return they put the pedal to the metal and get back in record speed. Might be great if you're the type that just likes hanging out on the ship - some people go on cruises and never leave the boat so these people do exist.
Also, NY cruises tend to be rather expensive - obviously huge population center and being able to get on a cruise without flying anywhere is nice.
Must be nice to live in FL or TX and be able to hop on short notice cruise deals!
