Book Synopsis:
  • A New York Times Bestseller
  • 2019 was the last great year for the world economy.
  • For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it.
  • America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.
  • Globe-spanning supply chains are only possible with the protection of the U.S. Navy. The American dollar underpins internationalized energy and financial markets. Complex, innovative industries were created to satisfy American consumers. American security policy forced warring nations to lay down their arms. Billions of people have been fed and educated as the American-led trade system spread across the globe.
  • All of this was artificial. All this was temporary. All this is ending.
  • In The End of the World is Just the Beginning, author and geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan maps out the next world: a world where countries or regions will have no choice but to make their own goods, grow their own food, secure their own energy, fight their own battles, and do it all with populations that are both shrinking and aging.
  • The list of countries that make it all work is smaller than you think. Which means everything about our interconnected world - from how we manufacture products, to how we grow food, to how we keep the lights on, to how we shuttle stuff about, to how we pay for it all - is about to change.
  • In customary Zeihan fashion, rather than yelling fire in the geoeconomic theatre, he narrates the accumulation of matchsticks, gasoline, and dynamite in the hands of the oblivious audience, suggesting we might want to call the fire department.
  • A world ending. A world beginning. Zeihan brings readers along for an illuminating (and a bit terrifying) ride packed with foresight, wit, and his trademark irreverence.

You're making up stuff. He's not ex-CIA. The guy use to work for Strafor. a geopolitical consulting firm. He has since moved onto his own shop. There is no evidence pointing to him ever being employed by the CIA. As far as hating goes - I've not once heard him say anything hateful about Russia, China or India. Other than his analysis about how Russia and China are facing a demographic collapse and their geopolitical actions will be based around those trends. As well as how the U.S will benefit from the collapse/weakening of other geopolitical rivals due to various factors. Mainly energy and population demographics. We're already seeing that with Russia.
Really great book that gives a broad overview of global supply chains work and how fragile our current lifestyle is.
Peter Zeihan was the keynote speaker at an industry conference I attended last month and it was absolutely fascinating. Been looking to pick up some of his books since then. Thanks OP!

The amount of people in the USA who have no idea how the world works is terrifying.

When 60% of the US workforce is white collar you'll have a lot of that.

Not really impressed with the synopsis of this book. The world goes in cycles.. this recent era of US power that underpins the world is no different than Pax Romana or Pax Mongolica .. Pax Americana will end at some point as all empires end, it will just be replaced with something else.

Dont fall for this bullshit artist. He hates Russia, he hates China, he hates India, he hates EU. A condescending prick would be a more apt description of him. I have read all his books. Keep in mind he is ex-CIA and his job after his job is structured and induced propaganda. He keeps shifting his goal posts with the news cycle - with his trade mark and worthless inflections. Countries have already retooled and or moving away from his rudimentary and superficial analysis. You have to feel bad for the corporations who hire these clowns as "consultants".

Its amazing what passes as good writing these days. Save your money and more importantly - save your time.

I have to agree with sphere. I used to love Zeihan but all his theories fell apart with government lockdown response to covid. When most world governments can simply destroy their economies on a whim with fear and uncertainty, there is no predicting ANYTHING.

I listened to this on audio (Scribd). It's been awhile, but it was a good read and the author's arguments appeared to be well-supported by the facts he set out. And you don't need to agree with everything he says to get something out of this book.
