Hi everybody. Please cheer me up. We took in a cat in the fall and he seemed to have adjusted really well (sleeps in the bed, snuggles on the couch). My husband opened the door today and the cat darted out. He isn't back yet. We are all depressed and my husband is freaking out.

Aww, so sorry to hear this! I've read many suggestions on helping them find their way back home. Like putting their bed outside or other items of theirs. Hopefully, others can suggest helpful ways.
Have you posted photos on your town pages on FB? In case anyone see's him?
Good luck, I hope he finds his way back home very soon!hug

Our two kitties are TNR [alleycat.org], lived their lives outside and only one decided inside it right for him.
They're old men now, I've seen both of them around for over a decade before they settled with us.
They know places to go, who do avoid, and the tiny guy that lives in our front yard feels safer outside when there's anything that scares him. Cats are very attached to a territory, know the safe places and escape routes. I'm not sure why your cat darted out, but be assured that if he was a neighborhood stray, he can take care of himself until he feels safe, and maybe hungry, enough to come home.

I know the anxiety of them outside. I just read a report on Nextdoor about expanding coyote packs (the creek I live next to is called Coyote Creek) showing a dog attacked in it's own backyard. It lost an eye and it's life isn't assured. I saw a coyote at the curb in front of my house, in a suburban subdivision of the Bay Area, about a year ago. Now we're having a big storm and my little 7lb cat is out there, under a roof DH built for him. He won't go into a box or anything where he can't see/have an escape route.

But we adopt them with the history and habits they already have and so we have to let them be part of Nature.

I'm not sure this is comforting or not but maybe you can let what is, be. And not feel like it's something you have to 100% control. Cats are more roommates than dependents.

If it's nice enough you could try just sitting outside with some of his food. Chasing around and calling him could scare him. I feed a few strays and I have to keep reminding the autistic kid that the strays are afraid of him because he's too noisy. When the kid calms down, the strays will tolerate him.

Good luck.Kittyhug

I am sorry. If you can leave your garage door ajar with her used kitty litter, Ive read that's helpful. If also read its helpful to set out stinky food like tuna. Shes likely nearby and hiding. Ask locally for a "have a heart" trap or two to set around so she can be safely caught. some city shelters will loan them out, some rescues, some private citizens may have them for loan. Nextdoor and Facebook are great places to ask private citizens.

Good luck and please update when you can. <3

Hugs to the both of you. hug

Given all the other good feedback you've gotten, that's about the best I can offer right now. My heart goes out to you.

Thanks everybody. He still isn't back but we did see him on our Ring doorbell cam a little after 2:00 am, but we were actually sleeping at the time so we missed him. Feeling slightly better because he is still in the area but won't be happy until he is back inside.

Husband ran out and bought a trap this morning so we have that set up.

Thanks for the moral support.
