That's a refurb deal tho… not sure if that's comparable to this new one which comes with 1 year warranty.

Not much. If you're comparing an M1 MacBook Air to an M2 Macbook Air, the difference in cpu for most people isn't all that relevant. The M2 MB Air gives you a slightly bigger screen and MagSafe charging along with a different form factor. Some prefer the new shape while others prefer the old.

For what it's worth I have this very model(MB Air M1/8GB/256GB) and see zero reason to update. This is an awesome little laptop and if I was starting with no laptop, I'd pick this over the M2 version on price alone. This is all of course providing that needs are minimal. I've bumped into running out of space a few times and have seen a hit on performance a couple times due to low memory but those are issues I'm ok with for the price.

Was on sale last year in store for $749.99 at Costco. Traded in a 2017 macbook pro and this base model air rocks in comparison.

If you're needing to store massive amounts of data, then this laptop isn't for you. There really are so many options out there for managing the storage this laptop has, i.e. RAID, cloud, etc. Same goes for smartphones...

My opinion is that smartphones with large storage sizes, i.e. 256GB and/or greater, is often a waste for most people that pay the premium. If you're without WiFi for long stretches of time, running a business, or are just lousy at remembering to clean up old pictures, videos, etc. then I see the logic in getting an iPhone with 256GB (or larger) of storage. Otherwise, I usually think most people buy those large storage iPhones just to brag. But that's just me.

Yes, I'm still using my 2012 MacBook Air. It's still good
As someone who did the same thing, if you upgrade, you will be mad at yourself for waiting so long. The M1 is the finest computer I've EVER owned. I may replace it with another brand new one and give this one to my daugher.

Things like this:https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Type-C-Tool-Free-Enclosure-EC-SNVE/dp/B08RVC6F9Y/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=... [amazon.com]

I used a Sabrent Rocket:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XQZPX81?pd_rd_i=B07XQZPX81&pf_rd_p=b000e0a0-9e93-480f-bf78-a83c8136dfcb... [amazon.com] attached to a 2018 Macbook Pro where my VM guests were on the Sabrent drive - and it worked great.

ETA: My much bigger concern is the 8GB memory, not Thunderbolt 3 attached speeds.

People mostly brag about getting the newest iPhone more than anything....

Apple could easily throw 1TB drive in there but, they wont.
