I think I'm going to pass because this model is 7 years old now and they have no plans to support Matter. I think I'll get a 2022 built Ecobee.

If your SP is Socal Edison, you may be eligible for a bill credit from Edison on the Nest & other qualifying products.

My HVAC guy said this is a great product so I picked it up from Costco on sale BUT I felt it was probably overkill for my small house so I decided on the Honeywell TH6210U2001/U T6 instead at a fraction of the price of the Nest. I have yet to try it so I'll provide feedback here when I do. Cheers!

Is there something people are doing with these that makes them pay for themselves... e.g. they change the temp more often and end up saving $200 in heating bills over X years?

This nest version does have motion detection functionality to change temp settings when you are away to conserve energy. Also will learn your schedule (based on motion sensor) to change settings to minimize energy usage.

I have this model purchased through my local provider for discount and generally have been pretty happy with it.

I have heard that some energy providers want access to your unit in order to "verify" that you are using the eco settings, but that was not the case for me. Personally, I wouldn't take a discount to allow that access, but to each their own.

That is what it being done in a nutshell. The smart thermostat will turn down or up the heat automatically based off of your habits, and will also lower the temp when you're sleeping.

Yea these smart ones learn your schedule. They know when to call for heat or ac. Depending on your settings, most likely it'll save you $$ over time vs. a setting where you just have a constant temperature set. I think the biggest amount saved is when you are on vacation or gone for a long time. Why call heat or ac when you're not there? That's just a waste of $$.
