You'll likely end up needing to replace the hose fairly quickly (depending on how often you use it) which requires disassembling the whole device. The replacement hose is ~$30-40 and replacement tutorials are on YouTube.

Use hot water (not warm but hot)
Use Bissell cleaning products (they are formulated much better than others)

After you clean a spot, you are supposed to go over it with just water (hot water that is)
It gives a chance for the machine to clean it self.
Of course its going to smell gross if you don't rinse it properly.

Hell, in my experience with a similar unit and an upright, it's easier and more effective even for a small spot to just use the upright. Only exception would be stairs or maybe in the car due to the cramped space, but if the upright hose will reach, it's more powerful.
