My son has a premium membership that renews at full price on Christmas Day. If I purchase this on his account will it just add another year?
It will add another year of whichever of the 3 tiers you purchase.
I'd ask him or see what games he's playing; owned games or games through PlayStation subscription to see if you would be better off with just the Essentials Plan that offers a few free games a month and access to play multiplayer online.

Correct. Those 12 month codes are no longer for sale. Only wallet top up cards. The days of CDKeys are over.
How sure are we about this? I have 1714 days left on my PS Extra and they charged $70 to go to premium. It said my renewal won't be until 2027.
If I'm wrong and you are right, are you saying this time next year I'll be downgraded to Extra?

Its showing the full price if you waited until the upgraded Extra sub expires. If you immediately purchase another year of Extra after the few days upgrade, it will stack an entire extra year of Extra on top of that. You could even do it more times that once.
Also, upgrades are capped at $100 for Extra and $150 for premium. If you were to purchase 5 years of Essential with 5 separatae purchases instead of doing the upgrade, then go in for a 6th time and pay $100 to convert all those to Extra, you will get an even better yearly rate.
Ex 45*5 = 225 + $100 capped upgrade fee for Extra = $325 for 5 years of Extra (325/5 = $65 per year). Same for Premium but its $150 capped fee. Gamble is if you will still be gaming or interested in PS Plus that far in future, who knows, could be a waste or a deal.

However I just got the thing up and going and saw this deal. As long as i get to download the games and not have to do that streaming bs, I don't think it's that bad.

Bought six years(?) of esssential last night. Then upgraded all seven years (in total) I had to premium for $150 after that.
