got the 55" tcl 5 series for $200 at best buy w local dimming. tcl 4 series doesn't have it

In all fairness, I agree with this statement. $188 for a 55" TV isn't much, just like $228 for a similar 65" TV isn't much. Expectations have to be in inline with cost and market conditions.
I think to me my main issue was my expectations were higher because I thought a 2022 TV would be significantly better than a 2010 TV, even given the lower price. I learned that was an unrealistic expectation. Yes, the new TV was 'smart' (I like Roku; the Roku part was fine to good - I've seen faster Roku, and I've seen slower Roku), and yes, it was 4k, but I couldn't get past the poor off-angle viewing, and (I'm aware this isn't a criteria for some folks) that characteristic was important to me.

There are cheap IPS TVs that are much better than your 2010 Sony. If viewing angle is much more important for you than image quality, check out entry level LG TVs - most of their panels are IPS.
OLEDs have good viewing angles, too...but they don't really belong in a $200 65" TV thread.
