Are these cruises typically full of trashy Jimmy Buffet fans? Sounds like a 2 day hangover.

BBB report, F rating: https://www.bbb.org/us/fl/riviera...3-90372169
BBB is a private business that extorts businesses to remove bad reviews. It's not a government entity and shouldn't be used to judge a business. It's basically old school Yelp.

The passengers on a Margaritaville cruise will make the passengers on a Carnival cruise look like they came from a country club.

You're partially correct. I've never seen them remove bad reviews or complaints. But some of the cities, such as Los Angeles, won't even publish the reviews or complaints on many businesses. You are right that they extort businesses to become members. When a business has this many bad reviews and the complaints go unanswered, I tend to believe it. Plus I also checked Cruise Critic.

So, it's kinda confusing - do I need to be a "hero" to sail for $98? Cause the offer seems to mention free sailing for heroes and while I'm not one, I'm willing to pay that price.

No, you don't need to be a "hero" to get the $98 price. Go to "book now" in the upper right and you will see select dates for $98.

They have been running this offer for a few months now. I looked into it around 4 months ago for my boyfriend's parents, since his dad is a retired police officer. The "free" cruise for heroes is still $98+ for your guest (they do not accept singles, only doubles with at least 1 other companion sailing at $49/night) and another ~$100 in taxes/fees (probably more if you choose a more expensive date). $50/night is a pretty standard rate for low/mid-range cruises of 7+ days, so the only "deal" is that you're getting that rate for a short weekend cruise instead, which usually has a much higher cost/day.

I have no idea what the ship is like or the quality of food or entertainment; the few reviews I found said the ships were old (but in the process of being refurbished) and the buffet was meh at best.

Personally, I think it's an OK deal if you have a "hero" in your family, but otherwise mediocre at best.

While not a fan of BBB , its not them that leaves or contacts themselves over poor service and leave the bad reviews. Just saying companies play a huge role in the negative reviews they get because they deserve them most of the time.
