Worth it. Plex is great and it's worth supporting the company even if you don't use the extra features.

many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc

In 2016 I paid $120 for Lifetime.

I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.

Love plex.

Loved Plex before and got the lifetime pass. It has the best gui of any media mgt software out there.

However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

What do you mean "yet"? Google "use plex when the internet is down" and you'll get guides from four years ago.

Here's a recent one though: https://www.howtogeek.com/303282/...ccess/amp/ [howtogeek.com]
The OP needs clarification sure but I surmise that he's talking about how the entire software is tied to their servers. All credentials and even core functionality requires connecting to plex.tv in some way or other.

If you are paranoid, there's valid concern that plex basically knows everyone's activities and hosted content... That's up to you if that matters though.

i have been waiting for the lifetime pass to go back on sale. i tried switching to jellyfin and it's just so subpar in comparison. while i don't think plex is perfect, the level of polish is miles ahead of jellyfin. if you've never used plex, jellyfin probably seems great. i was planning on continuing to use jellyfin for audio streaming since i didn't have a plex pass, but now i do.
I made the change over to JF 2-3 months back and that was my initial feedback as well that there's a lot to be desired.

I was waiting for plexpass to go on sale but after tinkering for a bit, I can say it's not as limiting as you initially think if you stick with it for a bit, and I'll skip the plexpass this time around.

JF is infinitely customize able whereas plex serves the masses really well. My original reason for leaving plex was due to lack of free hardware transcoding and lack of AV1 support.

Google Novachromic if you just want to bring the JF interface up to modern standards.

I am optimistic of JF's future, we do need a real open source contender for plex. Competition benefits everyone.

i use free version on shield and can't really justify paying extra. hdr tone mapping is nice though to play hdr content on non hdr display. plexkodiconnect on kodi with arctic horizon 2 skin is amazing.

found this email...guess 15 increase in 4 years is not too bad.

Get a lifetime Plex Pass for only $74.99*!

The Plex download feature works for movies, not for tv shows, when i try to play back a downloaded TV show episode i get a "external storage not found" message. I have not been able to find a fix for it. I'm running Plex server on Manjaro.

Plexamp is also a nice feature of Plex pass, for those still rocking their own music files.

Been using Plex for probably 8 or more years; several family members leech stuff from me and love the fact they can access this from anywhere.

I just bought this lifetime for $90... I figure giving $10 for each year I have used it is a good contribution.

I will say I am unhappy with the fact they are pushing their own streaming library to everyone by default but I guess they are looking for ways to cash in with ad sales...

Related to Plexamp, when the main Plex app switched from Sync to Downloads, I had a lot of problems downloading media from my server to my phone. Downloads would take forever, if they worked at all. And every time you start the Plex app, it would do some kind of integrity check and say my downloads were corrupted and have to start over. Basically useless for when I traveled and wanted to listen to my own music or videos on a plane. Anyway, workaround was simply to use PlexAmp as you can disable the integrity check, but that's only for music. I don't bother trying to download videos to my phone any more.

Agreed, I bought last year mainly to support the company. I do like the add on features of skip intro and the ability to download directly to my iPad/phone

I do not understand this software… I use nPlayer in Apple products and connect to my home server via samba and my devices can play 4k content without problem (latest iPhone pro / iPad Pro / Mac)… what is the point to subscribe to this? TIA

its basically your own netflix. it keeps track of what you are watching so you can continue watching. you can share with friends and family. it downloads the meta data so you have a lot of info about each movie or show. paid get access to plexamp which is a great music player.

Thank you for your reply, but what is "sharing with friends"? Others can use a link to access your home server?
