Worth it. Plex is great and it's worth supporting the company even if you don't use the extra features.

many features a great though: hardware transcode, skip intro, remote download for trips etc
In 2016 I paid $120 for Lifetime.

I've gotten my money's worth and then some. It's a very well supported platform that has kept up with my growing library, including stellar Dolby Vision and atmos support. I've got live television connected and I've got easy access to all my content no matter where my family travels.

Love plex.
Loved Plex before and got the lifetime pass. It has the best gui of any media mgt software out there.

However, recent upgrades especially shield TV, they have taken away ability to use external player like VLC. Playing 4k movies on shield 2017 is a struggle with the crap ExoPlayer that you are forced to use. It always transcodes and I got tired of trying to figure out the codecs. VLC on the other hand is a beast and plays anything you throw at it in outstanding quality...it's just isn't as clean as Plex.

Those are both clients.

You need to run the server on Window, Linus, MAC, or NAS/Docker. FYI.
Thanks. I'm now assuming my older laptop is causing some 4k content to buffer. Everything in the system is on Ethernet rather than WiFi. Can you recommend a NAS that would support hardware acceleration assuming I upgrade to Plus? TIA

The Synology DS920+ can hardware theoretically do 2-3 4k transcodes using the Celeron J4125's iGPU. I only say theoretically because I've never needed to do more than one in my household at a time. I got mine for $440 during the Prime Day sale in June of last year, but I could swear we usually see them somewhere around that price point during BF/CM sales. Might be different this year though since the new Synology boxes don't have updated,Plex-friendly, Quicksync-capable CPUs which more than a few people seemed to be hoping for.

You could also go with a cheaper NAS/Unraid/JBOD paired with a mini PC, like the Beelink Mini S, with one of the Celeron N5095/N5105 or Pentium Silver N6005 CPUs that all have Quicksync-capable iGPUs that can handle transcodes as well if not better than the J4125 in the DS920+.

Bought yesterday and played with it a little bit. Pity that I can't direct play on my vps. And I have to stick with WebDAV.
But overall it's a great software, especially plexamp.

have you checked by going by folders to see if its there. often its a naming issue where they matched the content wrong or doubled up on it.

Can anyone recommend a dedicated home media server or NAS box that will work well with Plex for under $200? I've been wanting to offload all my media and have access to it from anywhere and Plex sounds perfect. Every time I start to look at options for the actual hardware my brain gets overwhelmed. I'm not as tech-savy as I was back in the 90's. Thanks.
something like this will do.

Thanks. Repped and with the Columbia Country hack to get the lifetime Plex Pass for $67.88 on the CSR. Definitely a slickdeal.

Now it's time to reload my Synology 920 from last BF and get my local media loaded up with the fancy new features.

You gotta be kidding. You can't even buy a Chromebook for under $200 these days!

Like what?! They want to "offload all my media", so the hard drive(s) alone will probably cost half of what they want to pay.

What solution would you recommend in the $500 price range LESS storage?

Alternatively, what are the minimum PC requirements? I have an older, Dell i5 based office PC that I could add storage to.

I'm having trouble understanding appropriate NAS solutions but have the budget necessary.

I'm just using a Dell PC I picked up from a local university that I got for ~$50-$75 that has pretty decent specs, when they were having a deal. My media is just on external powered USB3 hard drives. Made it much easier to migrate everything from the old device I was using. Over the years I've picked up a few more externals to use as back ups just in case something where to happen.
