think I better stick with my Bluetooth keyboard+mouse?
I also have an M1 MacBook air and it hardly get's any use. When I need a larger screen w/ full keyboard and mouse I goto one of my windows desktops w/ 32" monitor. But most of the time (for content consumption and occasional typing), it's the ipad pro 12.9 w/ magic keyboard.

The 5th gen 12.9" IPP is about 1/2 mm thicker than the 3rd & 4th Gen models. So Apple released a 12.9" Gen 2 MK that is about ~1/2 mm thicker in the clam shell opening, but it's *NOT* required.
Apple even states the combo is compatible here: https://support.apple.c
I've also heard the new 6th gen IPP 12.9 is the same size as the 5th gen and supposedly the gen 2 Mk works with 6th gen IPP...so the 1st gen MK probably works as well, but YMMV.
