If you already have any AA size charger, AmazonBasics rechargable NiMh costs less than $2.50 per battery ($19.71 /8-pack) or $5 per pair.

It's rated 2400mAh per battery, so effectively 4800 mAh per pair. So lasts MUCH longer in my experience than these 3p Li-ion.

Also, you could keep a pair readily charged to swap wherever the ones in use are about to die. Rinse and repeat.

I hate it when I pick up the controller and find it's low on battery and the only way is to play connected to a charging cable - at most times it's not feasible due to the couch not being closer to any power socket. This is where my XBox controllers (running AAs) trump my Stadia controllers (built-in Li-ion battery). Just sharing my 2c, but I totally get it if the other way works better for you and many others as there's a reason why Google and Sony decided to design their controllers with rechargable Li-ion battery.
I'd stay away, had one of these and it stopped holding/taking a charge after a few months.
You can recharge directly from USB-C port.

Can this recharge directly in the controller or will it have to be taken out?

No back cover? One of my controllers back cover tab broke off. The rechargeable battery is fine, but if this comes with a back cover this would be cheaper.

Even at $5, You'd pass? Considering the price of batteries, I think this is a steal to be had.

Better to use these or panasonic eneloop batteries? I'm surprised Xbox hasn't just made controllers with built in rechargeable batteries like PlayStation controller has

Eneloops are terrific they last so long in my controllers I also like the Ikea rechargeable batteries and I've used the Harbor Freight ones with no complaints.

Agree with most of what you said, but the price of those Amazon batteries is absurdly high. Just bought 8 Eneloops for $18 a few weeks back. 2100 mAh versus 2400, but the Eneloops can be recharged 1200 times instead of the anemic 400 times that Basics can...plus, they're far more reliable. That said, either are still better than this crap.
