Good deal for me. The factory refurbs were $169 and made frontpage a few times. Been waiting on those to come back, but I'll take this

Tempting, if for no other reason than to simply kick the tires XD

Can any users comment on the real world impact of running a high end card through one of these at 4x?

I had the chroma version of this. In terms of performance, you probably will take a 20-30% fps hit assuming your laptop is not thermal limited.

Also, the cable comes with it is really short. You probably want to spend another $30 to get a longer cable.

Overall $200 is hard to beat if you don't want to invest in a desktop. A decent PSU + Case is already close to $200. For another $100, you can get the chroma version to use it as a dock.

I read the entire product page and several reviews and still don't understand what this is. It's basically only for macs or older laptops? And how would it handle something like the 4080?

I jumped on a refurb earlier this year just to kick the tires. I have it connected to a ultra sff PC with a 3060ti and it works great -- yes there is a ~20% hit but it's undeniably cool. I also agree that the cable is stupidly short, so I spent a fortune on a better cable. And yes, it sucks that it can't be used as a Thunderbolt hub/repeater. But I'd do it again in a heartbeat just because

This is an external GPU enclosure. It allows you to take advantage of desktop sized GPU's by plugging in a thunderbolt cable into a compatible computer or laptop. It does NOT come with the GPU.

For example, in my case, I have a Asus Zenbook Flip 13 which has integrated graphics and 2 thunderbolt 4 ports. I put in a RTX 3070 into the Razer core and plug the TB cable into my laptop. It will stop using my integrated graphics and instead use the RTX3070. You can choose to use your laptops internal monitor or plug in an external monitor.

It should also be able to charge a laptop through the TB cable, depending on your laptop.

Right, so the laptop's CPU would actually need to support the GPU you put in this thing?

Depends if you want to put the cover on. It fits a 3090 FE with cover on. But if you leave the cover off then the sky's the limit. I would guess the top mounted 4090 connector would be an issue. Lengthwise it would be fine.

In for a Chroma version to use as a dock / eGPU. Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind with the chroma version is that there is only one connector from pc to eGPU. So everything goes over that same connection. Video signal, network, USB all share the same 32gbs bandwidth.

It comes with only a 650W PSU and 2x 8 Pin connectors? Eep, that limits what cards you can put in it unless you want to shell out more money.

Edit: And max length of 330mm FYI.

The PSU is only driving the card and the upto 100w charging. 650w goes pretty far when you don't have to power the rest of the system.

Showing 399 for me.

Are there any devices like this that don't suffer that 20% parasitic loss?
