Dont cheap out on jack stand, get the $30.99 RIG RED one with double locking pin. They dont usually fail BUT they did fail (just like the harbour freight jack stands recall), definitely worth to spend extra $7 for your extra safety.

Harbor freight has redesigned and is probably the safest now with extra weld spots on inside along with cross bars and safety bar with a cotter pin to keep in place.

The ones with the locking pin are the best bet. I concur with NeatShop7155. Those quick release ones are terrifying when you're crawling under a multi-ton vehicle.

On a side note, that's entertaining - there are also some 3.78inch-tall 1/10th-scale jack stands at https://www.walmart.com/ip/EBTOOL.../498863289, evidently for model R/C cars.

Thanks neatshop and wireball for your comments. Almost got the black ones but ultimately passed on them. Hope the others come back in stock.

Fear mongering. The harbor freight stands failed due to poor quality control and cheaping out on the design.
Millions of these stands are in use. Look at the teeth and make sure they are crisp and straight. You'll never have an issue if so.

I feel the need to defend my name… but in this case I must agree with you.

There is nothing inherently wrong with quick release jacks unless the teeth are too small, like the original harbor freight jacks. When the teeth are too small, a light load on the jack isn't enough weight to keep the quick-release mechanism held down. Larger detents mean it is much harder to release the mechanism, even with a light load. The other issue is poor weld quality. Current harbor freight jack stands are perhaps the finest available without going to a US made jack, which are in an entirely different price point. If the torin jacks have failed, just get the HF, otherwise, the torin jacks would be fine. Does anyone know if the Torin jacks have a failure history?

I always use my jack as a backup with my stands in place. Just a little bit of tension, but not enough to lift it off the jack stands. Some people also throw a tire under the vehicle as a backup if it's off.

Harbor Freight features a reinforced base and extra pin to secure the locking pin.
