Unless they changed it with the newest model, the problem I had with these is that they print out whatever you shoot just like they did decades ago. So if someone blinked or the pic is blurry, then you wasted the print, which is not cheap. To make it worse, if you happen to take and print the perfect group photo, you only have one copy.
If your kids have smartphones, then get them a Zink mini printer instead. You still get the cool factor and the instant gratification, plus a printer is smaller and easier to put in a pocket or small bag, rechargeable, and most importantly, you can view and edit your pic before printing it. If it's a group photo, you can print multiple copies for your friends.
Experience: 3 daughters, 1 Instax camera, 2 Zink printers (1 HP and 1 Polaroid), and more money spent on mini photo paper than I want to think about.
A plus for Zink, Zink paper often often has an adhesive backing, which can be nice if you want to make sticker pictures. That's nice.
Aesthetically, Zink often will print on the entire paper but Instax has a border ala Polaroid.
Instax film is usually a bit more expensive (about 75 cents vs 50 cents per print).
Instax printers (as opposed to cameras) are somewhat rare because it is film. Instax cameras are analog - you take a picture on film and then it develops it (using chemicals built into the film like a polaroid). You can't just make it a printer like you can with something that uses Zink which is already entirely digital. (A bunch of Zink cameras I've seen while shopping double as printers.)
