I've been pretty disappointed across the board with software that is supposed to backup iPhones. Bought another one, Syncios, some years ago... and it doesn't even properly work anymore. Can't even use it to back up an iphone. It says something like I don't have the right version or I need to purchase some more expensive version / add-ons to do the same thing I've done before.
If you only want something to backup pictures etc, I think you're best off just uploading to icloud, then downloading it to your computer. Delete the icloud copy, and there you go.

The ones come with device limitations; are these lifetime licenses tied to the Apple device? What if I upgrade my device; do I need to purchase a new license?

Wait so if I have iCloud enabled, this is essentially useless?
It depends on what you intend to do with it. It will still backup, I suppose, but it's never worked on my phone (iP13ProMax) or iPad (12.9 M1). If you try and delete a photo from the Photos app, it tells you it can only be done from the Camera Roll in you Library. If you go to the Library and try and delete an image from the Camera it tells you that "Photos can't be deleted from your device because you've enabled the iCloud Photo Library"
Want to look at your calendar? Can't. You can look at a backup you made, or you can do a backup and then look at it. You can't interact with it. Same with Messages. It's true of just about everything - you can see what was in your last backup, but not what's on the phone (and, yes, this is while currently connected over wifi).
I'm guessing that the automated backup fails after an OS upgrade or iMazing updates, because I originally set up my phone with autobackups and they just never occurred, despite my PC being on 24/7 and the phone and PC being on the same network about 23 hours of every day.
Now, I'm sure there are things you can do with iMazing that people find useful, it's just that I bought it so I could manage my photo library wirelessly because iCloud was hobbled on Windows so that it can't two-way sync. Turns out iMazing is no better.

Usually they are tied to the specific device.
I tried finding an answer for you, and so I think this might be helpful
Do you charge for software updates?
We updated our licensing model so that we wouldn't have to charge for upgrades ever again. You can now choose between licensing iMazing for the lifetime of a specific Apple mobile device (Device License license), or opt for an Unlimited Devices subscription. In both cases, all future updates of iMazing are available free of charge.

I use this on a "lifetime", unlimited device legacy license and reccomend it, but can't reccomend their new licensing model. My issue is that they either charge you for a permanent, per-device license or a yearly, unlimited device license. The issue is that the former is practically invalid after [x] years because as you upgrade devices, you need to buy a new license. The issue with the latter is that it's more expensive and not cost-effective unless you are a business.
The software is fairly powerful, but a fair bit of what it does can be done through free alternatives and the software serves to streamline it. For instance, the Windows Photos app can import iPhone pictures and videos now. You can also remove metadata in bulk from the iOS device itself via Photos app. I haven't found something comparable for free that provides iOS filesystem access (File Explorer hides a lot of stuff). reccomend it to advanced users who want to get Android-level interopability out of their phones, but don't have the time to waste fiddling through 4 programs to do each individual function.

If you're just using your iPad and have iCloud turned on this is useless.
