It is very clever in its design. The sensors themselves are dummy sensors that only emit an audible sound and a frequency, when tripped. This allows them to maintain battery life and have very good range.
The plug-in hub (FYI, only 2.4ghz WIFI wireless is supported) is the 'brains' that talks to your home router and will send an alert to your smartphone if it picks up that frequency from the device, when tripped. That is my understanding of how it works.
If all the technology was in each sensor it would not only cost more, but it would have lesser range and drain the battery quicker.
I'm a big fan of these. I have the maximum 10 sensors in my house (max 10 per hub).
They are compatible.
To avoid the confusion, I will explain again...

I have two of these, its useless. I need water leak sensor that is reliable because you get a leak once in a way and these things better be functional then. This one, govee, and a bunch of others are almost useless. I found some of the smart things sensor to be ok but the most reliable one is honeywell sensors. I have put one everywhere from under the refrigerator to water heater. The cost of water damage is so high that it is not worth saving a few bucks on these unreliable sensors.

Just had one go off for the first time the other month. Scared the shit out of everyone, and completely forgot about it; therefore was super puzzled as what was making the noise. Wasnt until i looked at my phone that i realized it was a water sensor.
Thankfully no plumbing issues, just a child who loved throwing water everywhere when brushing his teeth.

These require a 2.4 GHz connection, not 5 GHz. If you have a router with both like my first gen google wifi then don't bother because they won't work...
🤔 it'll work as long as the 2.4 spectrum is avail (by itself or combined). Albeit some routers' or device's implementations of it are better than others, so it may take a few tries. I have mesh wifi where both channels are combined that allows them to be temp separated.
Can you have an outlet auto power own when it senses water? I have a pump and would like to automate this
These devices do not offer this
You'd need a different sensor connected to Home Automation (so there could be logic programmed with it). Such as VERA Z-Wave controller, and a Z-Wave water sensor, and a z-wave power outlet.
