Doesn't look like it's working anymore. I think Microsoft caught on. There's a lot of people in this thread using the VPN and still getting "This code was purchased in a different region and cannot be redeemed.

i used this with the Canada and did not have any issues. needed to login to account under USA after though to upgrade to the GPU. would not upgrade to GPU still on canada vpn.

I was able to purchase the Canadian code from cdkeys and use the VPN to get into my account and redeem the code without a problem. But after that, I hit a wall: After turning off the VPN, I could not purchase the one month of Game Pass Ultimate. I kept getting an error message saying 'Try Again Later.' I was basically locked out of Ultimate on my account.

After trying again multiple times later, to no avail, I reached out to Xbox support, and they told me that the Xbox Live Gold in a different region was causing a problem with the account. The support agent removed the Live Gold subscription, had me purchase one month of Ultimate (it worked once the Live Gold was removed), and she then added on 12 months of Ultimate for me.

So in the end, thanks to a cooperative/friendly support agent, it worked, but I had to spend a while on chat with Xbox support to get there.

US customer here. I did this three years ago and expired this week. I was able to buy 3 years of xbox live, and apply it to my xbox/microsoft account THE DAY AFTER I expired. Then bought one month of game pass through the offer on my Microsoft subscriptions page for $14.99 and was offered to upgrade existing live membership time and now have 3 years through this date in 2025 for way less than half the face price. I purchased worldwide codes on CDKeys for roughly $55 a year.

I did try to VPN and buy a $40 Brazil specific code but Xbox would not let me do that, probably because I have been an existing customer and they know where I have been. I have that Brazil code for sale if anyone wants it.

Why can't you redeem it? It is simple.
  1. Connect to Canada using Windscribe VPN (Free to join) or your own VPN service.
  2. Check if your IP is Canadian using whatismyipaddress.com [whatismyipaddress.com]
  3. Redeem [microsoft.com] the code purchased.
  4. Disable/Disconnect VPN.
  5. Clear cookies/cache or open browser in incognito/private mode.
  6. Purchase or join Game Pass Ultimate and convert your Xbox Live Gold membership to Ultimate.
