Probably too much for a 8 year old. These are made to go far and one wrong move and you just lost $380. For a younger kid I would suggest a $100 or less drone

Similar price at Sams Club with extra battery, charging hub and spare propellers but no 32 GB micro SD card or bag.

These seem like fun, until you are asking where CAN I fly, more than where CAN'T I.

Definitely know this is not a toy this thing realistically can go up to 1500 feet or higher.

People do your research before you fly in your area, get your trust certification it's free, may want to look in to some type of liability insurance, and as per FAA guidelines this does not need to be registered or use a remote ID as long as you modify or add any payloads since it's under .55 pounds.

How do people get those great shots up in the mountains then?
the rules says you shall not fly your drone more than 400 feet above ground level. which means if you start off on a mountain top that is 5,000 feet high then you shouldn't fly higher than 5,400 feet. wherever the drone takes off from starts at 0 no matter how high and it goes from there. for the dji drone, you can set the "limit" to anything you want and realistically, many drone pilots fly well about 400 feet AGL (above ground limit). i know they have their [good] reasons to do so but you are not supposed to unless you come up against the side of a mountain for example. when i was in mexico, for sure i was over 1000 feet and i could not see my drone overhead at 1,200 feet, it was just too high to see it with the naked eye.

Anyone have any thoughts on cost value analysis of this vs the mini 3 pro? I had my heart set on the mini 3 pro, because of avoidance, and the camera, then I found the Autel Nano Plus which has an even better camera, is a few hundred cheaper than mini 3 pro, but lots of complaints about no active track yet (for the price) and struggling in the wind.

For $380, this seems like a steal for a drone with a good (not great camera), not avoidance or active track, but not the end of the world.
I don't think you need avoidance unless you are specifically trying to fly it in close quarters. If you just lift off in a park or a typical backyard you can just fly straight up until you're above the trees then there's nothing to hit.

If you plan on buying the props, charger, and extra battery the flymore bundle from B&H is a slightly better deal. It's currently $479 after $30 off $509:

and 20 gift card to further sweeten the pot.

I will tell you having your first drone, i would 100% buy the mini 2 over the 3. yes, the 3 is better but for me, the 2 doesnt costs much in comparison so if break it somehow, it doesnt really hurt as bad. I took the 2 on vacation and took it to its limit over the ocean, it lost the connection but then came back on its own. If that was the 3, i dont think i would have allowed it to go so far. For me, i would jump on a deal for the 3 but as a first time droner, i would suggest the 2.
Thanks!

I got my kid this drone for their 8th birthday this summer. Learn in an open field and it should be fine. This is much easier to learn on and fly than a cheap one.

This ^^^^^^. Stop buying the non gps and / or cheap drones. they are impossible to fly.

In4One. Thanks op.

Did a lot of research and buying this for a close friend on his birthday but definitely need that return policy!

If I could easily return the refurbished and b&h model without S&H I would have jumped on both. However if the 1 star costco reviews don't give you a hint, the 1 star amazon reviews will.

I've heard others talk about batteries that wouldn't charge, drones that would get lost, some that won't even turn on, and incompatibilities with phone models that were listed (you can try to download the app here to see if it works before buying https://www.dji.com/mini-2/downloads). The list goes on...

Again a return policy is gold just in case! (90 day based on a post in march)
https://bobcutmag.com/2022/03/25/...urn-policy

Also after buying this I did need to buy a $15 charger, a usb c cable, and some protective gear. (links for reference, no idea if they're the best in class, etc.)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08383KN8N/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089GSHH94/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B097GVXNS6/

Note that the latter two doesn't come in a fly more package.

Lastly, I'm a little shocked some people on reviews stated this was a like a throwaway toy. I know some of them are making mad $$$ and this is cheaper than the pro line but wow...really? While I'm thankfully not in the poorhouse I still consider a $400-$700 item a splurge. I mean that's why I'm on slickdeals.

Anywho for the money this is likely close to if not best in price range class for drones. Don't bother with the "cheaper" deals on amazon if you are going to spend at least $199 on a drone gift for an adult.

Terrible camera. I bought (and returned) three of these because the camera is unusable.

Anyone can confirm if this remote controller has screen? I heard this one does not have it. I suppose it matters to me maybe since I will use it to do some recording activities
It does not. You connect your phone to the controller and your phone is used as the screen.

National Park and it refused to break the rule? Or was it broken somehow?
Good question. that was my first assumption, but I did check prior and It was in an area that was deemed ok to fly. I did google it later and there were others with same problem. Seems these drones don't like the cold. Other than that, it is an awesome drone. Super easy to fly. It's so easy I have trusted my 12-year-old son to use fly it. Pairing with Android is a bit of an annoyance compared to the wifes Iphone.
