While "up to 40%" is advertised, you can save even more booking via the united app. the same fares that are 21k miles on the web show up at 17.5k in the app. also some premium (usually not saver fare) routes are priced at 50% off the typical lowest saver fares. e.g. the direct flights that are usually 80k miles and the saver routes that are usually around 35k are now almost all 17.5k.

many of the europe and australia fares are not that good unless you're going to those specific cities in Europe, and the Australia fares are still high, but Japan is smoking.. 35k miles and $50 round trip is cheaper than many domestic routes. Decent chance at catching some cherry blossoms toward the end of availability
Great deal! Booked 4 tickets direct round trip to Japan for 140k points
Man I just came back from Japan. Was my first time. Definitely going there again.

This worked for me just now (745pm), PHL to CDG in early March 2023. 36k miles plus about $100 in fees. I have a United credit card, but no special status.

It's an amazing deal !

I was looking at combining excursionist perk with the Micronesia / Tahiti options but they don't have award flights between those as you have to go back to SFO.

Look at Chase Sapphire Preferred (60k signup bonus, $95 annual fee) or any Chase card that has a good intro offer. Chase is generally viewed as the most flexible for redemptions on travel and converting Ultimate Rewards points to partner airline miles for award bookings.

Thanks. I have the freedom and had the sapphire reserve 4 years ago but downgraded it to one of the free ones when I couldn't swing $400 a year any longer

Try looking at an specific airline card like the United Explorer card, too. I think their current signup offer is 60k miles, which is about one round trip ticket to Europe.
