    • A new and affordable L-series ultra-wide-angle zoom lens that's ideal for both film and digital SLRs. Superior optics are assured by the use of three Aspherical lens elements, in addition to a Super UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass element. Optical coatings are optimized for use with digital cameras. This lens focuses as close as 11 inches (0.28m), and offers both Canon's full-time manual focus and a powerful ring-type USM for fast and silent AF. It has a constant f/4 maximum aperture, and offers the choice of screw-in 77mm filters or a holder in the rear of the lens for up to three gel filters. Finally, it offers weather-resistant construction similar to other high-end L-series lenses.

16-35 is the newer canon lens with Image Stabilization. Image Quality of 16-35 is way better than 17-40 and worth the price difference here

this is also a great price on the 16-35 f4 L IS and the RF 70-200 F4 L IS:

According to Dxomark both lenses have about the same image quality. $299 for a L lens is a no brainer especially if your camera body has IBIS

I think the 16-35 is arguably a better lens. Not sure its twice as nice or how much you value IS, but its newer Canon design language also.

For the price, 17-40. 1 and 5mm difference for twice the price wouldn't make sense to me.

Or get both and return one.

My go to for landscape photography. I use a tripod most times while shooting deep DoF at f/11-f/16. Good lens. A little fuzzy in the corners so leave a bit of room for cropping.

The 16-35 f2.8 III is way better than the slow f4. Good prices used on KEH. If your wanting the best, of course.

IS makes a big difference. F/4 by itself is really slow.

f/4 vs f/2.8 is inconsequential with high ISO capable modern cameras. You trade off lens size and bokeh with cost

Had a 17-40 first and it was terrible, got a 16-35 after that and it's incredible. Based on a sample of one, me, I could never recommend the 17-40.
