They call it a champagne glass and then say it's ideal for dry rosé wines. Hmm. There's nothing special about rosé that wouldn't also apply to white wine, since both are served colder. I think a lot of Reidel's "this shape is perfect for cabernet!" is garbage anyway -- larger glass for red, smaller glass for white, tall/thin glass for champagne/sparkling. I'll take the French advice on wine glasses over Austria, especially on champagne since they invented it.

Reidel makes quality stemware, so this is a good price for four glasses. The marketing is a little suspect though!

I'm no expert on wine glasses (and don't desire to be) but seems like the most highly regarded manufacturers are outside of France- Glassl (Swiss), Zalto (Austria), Zwiesel (Germany), Gabriel (Austria), Riedel

Not saying the French make the best glass, only that they know wine better than the Austrians. In Champagne, where they make the stuff, they use flutes. Are flutes necessary? Hardly, and I was being a little tongue-in-cheek with my initial comment. The bottom line is the OP is a very good chance to buy some quality wine glasses from a reputable manufacturer. Just don't assume they're only good for champagne.

I'll credit Reidel for their marketing overall, though. They've convinced many people that $60 wine glasses are necessary, AND you have to buy ones specific to each varietal. That's brilliant. Smilie

It's a nice looking glass but I definitely prefer a flute for my champagne. The cheaper the better as they always get broken by my guests. It's to the point that I don't even buy nice wine glasses anymore.

There's a winery nearby that offers many classes, one of which is "glass" tasting where you try the same wines in different glasses. It's interesting how the different glasses affect the smell but unless you're someone who is really into wine and someone who, for example, is persnickety about holding wine by the stem or the base, it really doesn't matter.

That said, I like nice crystalware. I bought a 4 pack of these but these are not the nicer Riedels but are good to have on hand for larger parties where they can break. I'm definitely not matching wines to glasses for these though.
