I was actually just looking into this trip on AMEX Travel. This is a pretty typical price. For anyone looking to go, REALLY read up on Tahiti. You basically need to spend an extra $400/person to fly to the island you actually want to be on, or spend $90 for an all-day boat ride. To make all that worth it, you'll want to spend 10+ days there. So it doesn't matter too much if you save a hundred on the flight, this is still a $5,000 trip.
That's not bad for an awesome trip to Tahiti. But it's not that cheap either. I can do Kauai or Los Cabos for basically free with Chase, Alaskan, or AMEX points, or $2k total if I pay cash. But there's no easy way for a really cheap Tahiti trip. That said, I think I'll take my kids in about three years when they're old enough to properly snorkel.
