They are pretty amazing otherwise. The wireless range kinda blows even under ideal conditions. The mic is pretty good.

These are closed back. You can use Bluetooth with your phone, but for gaming you are meant to use their proprietary 2.4 GHz wireless USB dongle that comes with it. The positive side of that is that you get less compression, less latency (practically none), and much better microphone performance than Bluetooth. The down side is that homes (and especially apartments) with a lot of 2.4GHz noise (like multiple WiFi networks, cordless phones) may interfere with the connection and range. By the way, Xbox REQUIRES that Audeze (pronounced like "Odyssey") pays a license fee to allow the USB transmitter to operate, and Technically Sony does too for wireless headsets BUT they do allow most USB audio devices to work, so technically the Xbox version would also work on PS4 and PS5… which is particularly nice on the PS5, because the new console pre-processes spatial audio for headphones and sends that through USB. I'm grateful for Sony's approach.
I haven't used this model specifically, but it's based off of the Audeze Mobius that I do have. The Mobius has extra features with head-tracking and built-in spatial audio processing (DSP), but you don't need to double-dip the DSP with the spatial DSP performed on the PS5 or XSX, and the Penrose's wireless performance will be better. Ergonomics are a little bit stiff and chunky, but it's comfortable enough for a gaming headset and planar magnetic headphone. Mine hasn't broken during my several years of ownership, though a cosmetic chip of plastic came off. Buttons are stiff and the power button takes a second to respond/sometimes takes a second try. The Mobius had a faint white noise in the background… didn't bother me at all when listening to game audio or music, and Audeze might have used a different wireless chipset on the Penrose. And Audeze makes really good sounding Planar Magnetic headphones! Full bodied sound with plenty of sub bass and good mids timbre, not the biggest soundstage or "plankton" as some say, but a good sense of detail and spatial DSP helps with soundstage.
The sound really is the star of the product. Once you get it connected and running, it provides IMO a very nice experience while listening to it.
There are a ton of the on sale on Amazon right now but I have no idea what's good.
I was thinking these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MP4HT95/
Anybody use them? Or have another suggestion in the $100-$150 price range?
Wireless + gaming headsets are a mixed bag.
If your son does game chat with teammates, Bluetooth is not the way to go… cuts the audio quality in half so that the game audio can come one way and the mic audio can go the other way, also there's like a quarter second lag with most BT headphones (not noticeable watching videos on a phone or tablet, but noticeable for most people playing action games).
Good gamer headsets use 2.4GHz wireless (like WiFi or a cordless phone), almost no lag and better sound quality all around. I'm not sure if Skullcandy is still making the PLYR and SLYR wireless headsets, but the Audeze Penrose and EPOS/Sennheiser GSP 670 headsets are the two cream of the crop options, and everything else is a substantial step down in clarity and SQ (including the bloated, muddy Astro A50). Special exception to some HyperX models which were made in collaboration with Audeze and are rebranded Audeze Mobius or Penrose, or HyperX rebranded Beyerdynamic headphones.
If you live near many WiFi networks (like in an apartment), wired headphones like the Drop + EPOS PC38X will simply be more reliable, and I believe Drop still has them on holiday discount. I've owned a pair of PC37X since March 2017, and I still use them every time I'm on my PC, great value, but I also got the PC38X when they came out and use them when I game on my PS5 or iPad. The PC38X are basically a headset version of the well-regarded Sennheiser HD 560S with a boom mic added and a bit more bass, killer value at the cyber Monday price.
I think the Penrose is like the Mobius in this respect: even the 3.5mm input is run through the internal electronics, so you wouldn't get much benefit from the SQ of your sound card vs USB. However, the internals are pretty good and matched to the planar magnetic driver; no treble glare like on all creative labs soundcards with stock op-amps.

Mic monitoring is terrible. There's almost none.
I shout when I game so I need strong mic monitoring. This is what ultimately made me buy steelseries Nova pro instead
What are your thoughts on the Nova Pro? I am trying to get a headset that has better footstep positioning for pubg and COD
They're awesome. Good bass good treble. Good for footsteps especially since it's all customizable right on the base.
There have been some firmware issues. There was a mic issue on Xbox where it would always be picking up noise and it looked like your mic was always on but I believe they just fixed it and obviously if you're not on Xbox then it wouldn't matter anyways. There's also the loss of mic monitoring from updating. It's not totally gone and still works but the volume of mic monitoring is much lower and I need it. I have refused to update them since I bought them (originally returned a pair to get old firmware plus better price) due to the mic monitoring being lower.
As for comfort they aren't terrible but some people have an issue with the little and nubs in the middle of the headphones as the stock cushions aren't thick enough for some heads to prevent irritation. Thankfully people have been releasing 3d printed ear cushion adaptors and wicked cushion just came out with their ear cushion/adaptor set that is on pre orders and I believe they just shipped their first batch yesterday.
Other than those things it's pretty great
Are you the same guy posting this to every Audeze deal I see? 😆
Now I'm tempted to try these at $170 just to see what the difference is.
Not great for FPS.
You really need to baby this while using it. So damn fragile.
