I wouldn't be surprised if they are no longer manufactured, and retailers are just trying to clear out their old stock. I had this same model when it was labelled Huion 610 Pro about 10 years ago.

Amazon has this same model for $25 currently.
I'm worse than a terrible artist, but I have need to better my drawing skills for DIY projects.
There's a slight learning curve - hovering the pen brings your mouse cursor to the equivalent spot on screen; tapping is a left mouse click. This has 2048 levels of pressure - so depending what program you are using - more force equals darker line, larger diameter, etc.
I know there's function buttons, but all I've ever used is 'undo' and tool size.
We're on pen #3 (because they get stepped on) - pens can be found on Amazon. The most recent one we're using is a rechargeable model; I don't necessarily think it's significantly lighter or better than the AAA model it comes with... only bought it cause it was the same price as the AAA model on Amazon. Battery replacements are so far and few between it shouldn't be considered a dealbreaker - actually it's easier to find a AAA battery than the special cord to charge the pen.

for $20 it's a very good price, even if the quality is of that of the older wacom graphire or early intuous model(s).

Word recognition is not as cumbersome as you think. The ones I've used don't depend on spatial accuracy on the tablet. You simply write an entire word in cursive. When you lift the pen, the word is entered into the computer. Then you go to the left again and write another word. And so on. The input is word by word. In fact, that's how I currently enter words on my tablet and phone when typing (and voice recognition) is impossible. And it's how many Asian languages are recognized - word by word. In other words, you don't have to move word by word, line by line -- just as you don't have to do when typing on a keyboard. The computer enters and formats it for you. All you need to do is type the words.
