I hacked mine so when you powered it up, the main screen said don't panic and had the smiley logo on it. Was really a cool device.

Not having illustrations is better in my opinion. I read the original books using my imagination and it was awesome. Then a few years later I found out about the radio version. Thought I hit gold. Ends up I hated the radio version and also the movie. The voice overs were hacky and cheesy, and so was the art and imagery. In hindsight 'm so d*** glad I read all the books 1st. And I read them all 3 times.
Another great thing about these books is the written out about 5th grade reading level. That sounds like a big negative But it was a positive. Adams created a lush complex universe using simple English.
If you've never read a book covered a cover before this is an excellent choice. All the books and the series are masterpieces. So when you finish the 1st book you're gonna want more and there is more right there.
