Once was enough for me. I hit 3 islands and at the end the negatives were far more than the positives. I'm sticking with Mexico, Costa Rico, and soon to be visited Colombia.

Hey, people love Hawaii, but I didn't care for it. YMMV. Have you been to both MX and Hawaii?

Honest question. I've been to both Hawaii and MX multiple times. I'd say, the only island I'd happily return to are Oahu and Maui. Both Kauai and Big Island are great if you are looking for a quiet time with outdoor activities like hikes/biking as the highlight, otherwise there aren't enough food options that open to a reasonable hour.

I do agree with you that Hawaii food prices are insanely expensive, considering the quality is just okay. Makes Bay Area food prices seem fair. Just returned from Maui in Oct. and was shocked by the food costs. But you're on vacation so it is what it is.

As far as Mexico, I've been to most of the tourist destinations (Cancun/Playa del Carmen, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and even Tijuana/Rosarito in my younger days. Haven't been to Mexico City, so that's probably only place I'd want to check out. With the corrupt government, safety concerns with local gangs/cartels, I'd be wary of supporting Mexico. If you're just going go to and stay in a resort, you'll be fine (same for places like Jamaica). Even if you stay in the main tourist areas, you should be fine, but there is always that chance.

Live your life, but I am not putting my family at risk to save a few bucks. I'd rather stay local and go to San Diego, or even splurge and hit up Asia countries too.

The cartels are shooting each other and not the gringos. Been going to PV for decades and never a problem. That said, caution is always smart in many areas of gang activity. Same with many of our large US cities that are a no go at night. Also have been to a dozen other locations, small to large (Mexico City). Traveled by RV and air both. I just bought a house in Nuevo Vallarta (just north of PV) that should be finished in April/May. Beach is 10 minutes away, house is 3/2, 1,300sq ft., community pool, entertainment room, fully gated with security at entry. I'll do 6 months there and 6 months in CA or wherever. Mexico has a 6 months stay rule so one needs to go out and then back in to reset the clock. By applying for a Permanent Resident Visa, one can stay as long as they wish, subject to some qualifications like proof of income. I'm looking forward to getting out of CA. No financial risk if I don't like living there as rentals are in high demand, especially long term
