why is this so expensive? A quick Google shows this is the only 3-meter-long Thunderbolt 4 cable? Are these things really that expensive to make?

No idea really... I have a Belkin 2m, Active Thunderbolt cable. That's currently $50 on Amazon... Not sure how the extra +50% length justifies the 158% price increase. For what it's worth, the Belkin doesn't have a woven exterior. It's just a "regular" cable. Works beautifully though.

I guess if you really need that extra ~3 feet to accommodate your particular workstation/desk/monitor setup you're screwed.

It's also thunderbolt 4 not thunderbolt 3… higher minimum spec requirements.

Disappointed to see downvotes on these separate threads, as altogether they perfectly capture what is driving this price point. The Apple cable isn't garbage, in fact this particular Apple cable is arguably one of the best cables you can buy in this category [youtu.be]. The fact that the category almost entirely exists of just this one model of Apple cable [theverge.com] says a lot about how/why that price point exists.

If someone had a need for a cable like this, they'd likely hand over the cash (gladly or otherwise). Fortunately, few average users have a need for a cable with these performance characteristics at this length. If we're lucky, the lack of licensing fees in USB4 [arstechnica.com] will save us all... though it's also just as likely to make things a little worse, also!
