They are $20. Throw them in the washer on cold and hang dry or roll them in a towel to dry. It's not a $300 cashmere sweater

These will be fine as a Mid layer, but they are most likely extremely thin compared to something like smartwool, and will most likely pill quickly.

A quality base layer will offer features like, front zipper and neck coverage which are essential, to me for temperature regulation/adjustment.

I own a couple meriwool base layers and they are better than my smartwool, and half the price at about $50. they have not pilled after many washes, and remain soft and not translucent like cheaper merino I've bought.

This will look great for the #BacktotheOffice crowd. I usually wear a collared shirt underneath.

Any downside to buying this as a layer for outdoor activities instead of buying a Smartwool long sleeve shirt for >$100?

Nevermind, this is different from the one I got previously.

regardless, yes great as a Mid layer...tbd as a base layer.
I AM thinking base layer Smilie. I wouldn't use Smartwool 200 or 100 shirt as a mid-layer.

Thanks. I also use merino and merino/acrylic layers with zippers and think they are ok as a base layer for cycling even though they are made for office. I always wondered if there's a reason to splurge on Smartwool 100 and 200-weight long-sleeve shirts for other activities or buy those $20 office sweaters and spend money elsewhere.

They will probably wash fine with woolite and the gentle cycle. Dry flat.

They are wayyyy different. I have a smart wool long sleeve that has lasted several overseas trips and many camping trips.

This is a delicate fabric that needs special attention and will not stand abuse. These only make it a few holidays for me.
