If you're going to go through hassle of installing an RO system, at least get 4 stages to include the sediment filter. I have a 5 stage system (no UV light) and it's great, have had it for about 7 years now and parts to eventually fail so I had to replace the tank and the housing for the filters, but still worth it to have excellent water (I use a TDS meter and the city water is about 210-220 where after the RO system, I'm getting 12-14 TDS which is cleaner than bottle water). We use RO water for cooking, coffee, etc and everything taste great.

Lol, illegal. That term is used so liberally. It's against the building codes in some places. As a homeowner one has the right to whatever you want to do within your own home, but at your own risk.

However, if a licensed plumber or contractor were to do something against the code, then they are in violation and may lose their license.

Read the reviews on Costco, people complaining about the availability and price of filters and there seems to be leaking issues down the road.

noob question, I have been wanting to have a RO system but the only opening by the sink is taken up by the dishwasher air gap. Is there any way to install a RO system without having to drill a new hole on the granite countertop? I asked a plumber and he said "no" and strongly advice against forgoing the airgap for the dishwasher.
I was scared to drill a hole in my granite but it was actually really easy. Watched a few YouTube vids. I bought these at @7.74. That one currently unavailable but same stuff in a search.

RO has been draining way too much waste water for me. Stopped using it.
How much? It's usually 2-4:1. I use about a gallon a day so I'm not overly concerned with two gallons waste. I can just not flush once when I pee to make up for it.

if you need a hole in your countertop, buy a "diamond hole drill" on Amazon, and diy. go slow and stop and cool down the stone and drill with ice frequently. it's a much easier diy job than I thought.
I used duck tape and made a little dam around the hole and filled it with water. It got HOT! like boiling/steaming, but I just drizzled cool water into it. Kinda scary as to breaking my granite but it was no big deal.

I personally wouldn't depend on a high loop to guarantee against backflow contamination of an RO system. An inline one-way check valve like this is super easy to install and a much better guarantee against backflow.

https://amazon.com/dp/B00AELC3MI?...ct_details [amazon.com]

I've installed RO systems with airgaps and the drainage noises are too annoying for my peace of mind.
I know that RO systems can have a air gap in the discharge line if they are plumbed into the main undersink drain pipe. But I thought the earlier discussion was about removing the Dishwasher air gap to put in the RO faucet, and using a high loop instead on the dishwasher drain hose to prevent backflow FROM the sink drain TO the dishwasher basin? I think you'd need a much bigger check valve for the dishwasher drain....

+1. Just use the correct diameter and plenty of water to soak when drilling through. It takes some patience (probably half an hour), but you'll get there.

PSA - before buying any RO, check and check again to make sure the filters used are commonly available.
I had purchased one system from Costco and a year later could not find any filters for that brand, nor could I find compatible filters.
I ended up buying a Watts Premiere system, and for over 5 years now I have been able to use the system (replace the filters and the occasional RO automatic shutoff valve) both of which are available on Amazon

anyone who buys a system that does not use
industry standard 10" or 20" filter media
is just flushing money down the toilet
and limiting their filter media choices
which may vary widely by city used.

example is philly versus new york
philly needs metals and vocs
new york needs chloromine
Any example units? I am getting an in-home consultation from Costco next week, I'd like to learn more about these industry standard filter medias (20" sounds huge for under-sink) so I can talk to these guys.

Zerowater gets 0 TDS all day until the filter is clogged, what do you guys think of Zerowater Filter? Yes, I bought it after watching project farm tested it against Brita, Pur, RO, etc. Also, my RO (generic) was leaking. Under the sink RO will eventually leaks, get some leak detector and be prepared.

Yes there are faucets that have a extra filtered spout. MENATT Purifier Kitchen Faucet, Commercial 3 in 1 Spring Drinking Water Faucet, Pull Down Water Filter Kitchen Sink Faucets (Brushed Nickel) https://a.co/3vWNEj4

This is a brilliant idea.
But then do you remove the fridge filter? Ours won't work without a filter.
Yes and some refrigerators auto bypass without a filter installed and some you need a bypass adapter

Removal of the air gap is illegal in most areas. Drill another hole or get a countertop RO
I recommend actually checking applicable code. General plumbing code does allow for looping the discharge hose up the side of the sink in lieu of air gap.

Depends on your incoming TDS. The higher it is the quicker you need to replace the zero water filter when it becomes cheaper to install RO.

My RO system drain share the drain with Dishwasher. I install the airgap. But the water will flow out when Dishwasher start to drain due to the pressure. So I have to remove the airgap and put a one way valve (or check valve) to prevent dishwasher drain back flow.

It says "Certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 58". But other OS system has more NSF certification. For example, the Aquasana OS system has "NSF tested and certified to NSF/ANSI Standards 42, 53 (includes P473), 58, and 401". Dose that make much difference?
