I've personally been a long time fan of the NFS series, with my favorite being NFSMW from 2005.
I haven't really enjoyed any of the "modern" NFS games since the 2015 reboot that was simply titled "Need for Speed".
I thought NFS: Heat was ok, but still mostly did not enjoy it. With all that being said, Unbound is a major improvement. I actually have fun on the game.
The anime/cartoon effects can be disabled on your car if you simply don't like them, so don't let that factor into your decision. But as for the gameplay, it's solid. The car list is solid. The soundtrack is great if you enjoy Hip-Hop music. I will happily say this is the best Need for Speed of the last 4-5 games IMO.
But even if you don't believe me, there is a 10 hour trial of the game available on EA Play. On PC/PS5, it's $5 if you don't have it. On Xbox, it's included if you have Game Pass Ultimate. So just try it for yourself.

If you don't know who "Criterion" is, this probably isn't the game for you. Definitely a "for fans only" affair. I can see myself adding it to the collection eventually since Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted are some of my favorite racers ever, along with the Forza Horizon series
