You won't get 25 miles on these unless you hit a repeater. And I don't believe you can program repeaters on these. Great for kids to play with but remember your conversations are not private. They operate on FMR GMRS. You will get about half a mile if you're lucky. 5 Watt GMRS radios work much better

It should work in any circumstance if the distant between isn't far than 15-20 miles.

Are these weather resistant in the sense that there's no way to impede the mic hole? Just wondering for skiing, have some Motos, but sometimes snow gets into the mic hole and then it's garbled. It still works fine after drying out
