This is a M.2 SATA drive, be careful if you're looking for a NVMe (PCIe) SSD, you need to get the MP33 for $5 more in this case.

But if a M.2 SATA SSD is what you're looking for this is a great price.
This exactly. MacBook Air 2012 and older requires SATA and unable to use NVMe. This with adapter (for macbook air) = more space for older devices on the cheap. I bought one for $25 last week, so it's even better now at the current price. This is mainly for lowest price, not highest performance per price or anything like that (big duh). In fact, the NVMe people shouldn't even be looking at this while complaining about it.

genuine question, why would someone choose this over 2.5" form factor?
Some possible reasons:
1) computer might not have a 2.5" bay for that type of drive
2) computer might have an m.2 AND a 2.5" bay in which case you could use two drives instead of one
3) you can turn an m.2 into a smaller portable external drive than you could with a 2.5" drive

old machine compatibility if out of sata ports and there is a m.2 sata on board, we're talking 6 year old machines at this point.,
