That said, I see a couple of options for $250ish with core i3 and 256GB SSD posted (in store only apparently)

So, unless you need a Chromebook, I'd advise to go with a full-fledged for a $100ish more

Sure it is only $129, but if you won't be using, why just clutter you desk or coffee table.

I wouldn't use Passmark for any kind of benchmarks.
For CPU benchmark I usually use Cinebench. Attached you can see the Intel m3 is a better performer than the Athlon.

16gig is indeed the sweet spot on Windows OS but on ChromeOS 8gig is the sweet spot. ChromeOS is much lighter OS

it is a good performer. Handle school apps no problem. Not going to overheat. It low power CPU. And with 8gig of ram you can use multiple apps no problem..

I got that exact C13 also. Been using it for last 2 days after I got it. It is slow as molasses. If you just browsing the web and watching Youtube it is fine. Anything else beyond that it will slow the C13 to a crawl. But if you don't notice any slowness stick with the C13. That screen and build is super nice for 150. Also the bottleneck on the C13 is the 4gig of RAM.

I am actually "upgrading" from an Ideapad 3 CB touchscreen with MTK8183/4GB/64GB
I still have not opened the box of Thinkpad C13 Yoga yet…. on the fence

Ditto, also keeping my C13. My main use is outdoors and the display is wonderfully bright. 300 nits, 1400:1 contrast ratio and 72% NTSC. Versus 250nits, 45% NTSC, N/A contrast.
The Touch screen, convertible, dual camera, fingerprint login, etc are also nice touches I'd miss. I do like the ability to quickly rotate the unit for portrait display.
My main concern was only 32 GB storage but seems adequate for my use so far. And after using it for a week I have not experienced any slow or missing gigaflops.
The ASUS does seem like a great deal for the price though, I'd seriously consider it if I was on the fence with the C13.

Keep in mind that there are two different 14" Asus touchscreen models. The C433 and C434. I purchased the C433 for $179.00 and returned it immediately due to the bendable keyboard. I wouldn't hesitate at all to grab the C434 if it ever drops to $179.00.

yes agree to all your points. Also like to add the C13 keyboard is super nice also. Touchpad is just okay. Not as smooth as I would like it to be but 150 it is very nice overall package. I mainly just been using for surfing the web and youtube. For anything else it way to slow for me. I also have an Asus 713 for reference.
