The Frontier gate agents are strictly enforcing personal size at the gate. All personal items must fit in the metal bin at the gate without any pressure or force. These agents are a hired by a third party company and receive commission for each bag charged at the gate.

Personal item dimensions are 14 x 18 x 8. If your personal item does not fit without force they will charge you $100 for a "carry on" at the gate (each direction). Pro tip: you can purchase the carry on on the frontier website for $60 instead, as long as you can make the purchase before the door closes. The gate agents don't like this because they lose their commission. Be careful this holiday season.

so this is how they make profits: lure customers in with low airfares, and charge $100 for each over-sized carry-on?

Confirmed via the FRONTIER gate attendant today that Frontier gate staff are working for another company and do make a commission for each bag. Why else would they put up with multiple angry customers yelling at them for each boarding?

You are right, they are working for another company, depending on where you're located they're probably employed by either dnata, ATS, WFS, Menzies, etc. Second, why would they tell you they're making commission off of your misery. I assure you they're not making commission, but rather they were promised something, probably a pizza party. Also if you opened your eyes, you might notice someone in a suit standing not far from the gate agents watching everything. I used to work for Spirit airlines, or rather Swissport, doing this exact same thing.

I flew Frontier 4 times over the last month, and confirmed, they will check almost every bag. Two times, they said the bag has to fit with little effort. I saw them charge three passengers because they wouldn't let them try to push down on their backpack. Do yourself a favor and purchase the American Tourister 4 Kix Expandable Softside Luggage, Underseater. It fits perfectly (just don't stuff it) it holds plenty of clothes for a quick trip.

OP must be smoking crack. As a former airline employee, I can 100% tell you that the gate agents don't make commission from carry-on bag fee sales. Quite honestly, most of them would rather let you go with your bag than face confrontation. The only reason they're becoming confrontational is because their supervisor/managers/GMs are nearby watching ensuring that employees are following corp policy. Especially during the holiday season, managers are under higher pressure from HQ to meet or exceed station revenue goals, or risk getting funding reduced the following year. This is how stations lose/gain routes and eventually get shut down if HQ deems them unprofitable. Days of commission in the airline industry are long gone. What airline would willingly give a cut of it's profits to third party contractors? That's another thing, most airline employees don't even work for the airline they're representing, they're third party contractors meaning they do all the work with no benefits at all.

Very true
Also the FAA guidelines they get fined if caught . And they are under cover secret shopped all the time

I'm afraid Gamer765 is the crack smoker. I can confirm what OP and Reddit claims. The gate agents for frontier are now frequently contractors that do get a commission on bag fees charged at the gate. The incentives are aligned in such a way that the gate agents are making up rules like "you have to just set it down and let it slide in by itself" all the while your straps on your backpack get caught in the open slots on the sides. They won't let you dislodge the straps from the slots and tell you that you're forcing the bag in… they'll tell you that you'll miss your flight if you don't just pay. Not to mention this has really increased boarding time and decreased overall morale on flights. You'll find these rules are absent from frontiers' terms because other than the dimensions all the other little gimmicks are the gate agents trying to get a commission. This is a terrible customer experience and I hope Frontier wises up. I'm all for charging people who really go over the limit but there is no excuse to be predatory and unreasonable.

Just shove everything into your pockets before you board, then put them back in your bag afterwards

I get that people flaunt the rules on this stuff all the time, and they shouldn't. But if they're truly incentivizing people with the only goal of playing "gotcha" with people, that's some next level nonsense. When you incentivize the bag police they aren't objective from the start.

And you can't squash the bag in the sizer? That's nuts too. If you can squash it into the sizer, you can squash it into the place on the plane it belongs.

There have to be better ways to monetize their services without alienating so many people with nonsense.

This happened to be in late October. I had a duffle bag with 5 piece of clothing inside and the gate agent said my bag is "different" and would not let me on the plane unless I pay for the $99 fee. Bag went into the size rack with ease and she would not acknowledge it. She even closed the door to the tunnel to threaten me and the 4 other passengers saying she will not let us on the plane if we don't pay.

It's just not worth it to save a few bucks flying frontier. Everything about frontier airline sucks

Have you traveled on frontier with the American Tourister 4 Kix recently (since this new "crackdown") That is the bag I have always used with frontier/ spirit, works great.

Worried that these overzealous gate agents will try to charge for it. It fits in the sizer, but not easily, and I think the handle sticks out the side of the sizer. Of course the sizers are literally designed with the cutout on the side so the handle can stick out.

I've flown frontier over a dozen times this year and only had one flight delayed which was weather related. As a low maintenance flyer who uses lounges and clubs to stock up on drinks and goods the prices on frontier are great. Flight attendants are generally friendly and boarding process on and off the plane is great and I just need a back pack for my trips. I know what I'm getting when I book frontier. If I did need luggage or carry on I would def book another airline cause cost would be about the same. When I fly southwest I'm constantly annoyed with boarding looking like cattle lining up then having to check my carry on cause the over head is full then having to deboard the plane and having to wait for everyone to grab their stuff in the overhead taking much longer to get off the plane. Ya there's pros and cons of frontier but for me, playing $50-90 round trip to Denver and Vegas is def better then paying $3-500 for things I don't need such as picking a seat, checked bag, drinks, etc.....

Love how the last topic about luggage I was on folks were saying this is absurd and airlines don't care about carry on or personal item sizes for domestic or international flights. And now here we are.
