Keep in mind that Jegs did a special and canceled everybody's order and put the item back up for full price.
I'll put it this way. Over the years i've bought over 5k worth of RC cars. I used to race at my local track and it it gets expensive. I donated all my RC cars because I was tired of working on them and my local track was running a program for kids.

I've refused every deal i've seen in the past 3-4 years because I don't want to get "sucked in" but the 4wd version of this deal is insanely good. If I were into RC i'd have bought at least 2 but I did buy one.

You can change the gear ratios in the axles just like a real truck and it's a newer concept that comes along with Crawlers/Real style trucks.

These have live solid axles vs independent suspension which add to realism and in some ways are more protected/strong but the downside is they simply won't handle as well and quite a few monster trucks have independent suspensions. This will articulate like a crawler and you can install rear steering too.

You can easily install a Brushless system and even this system is 3s capable but even the review says it's not needed as the brushed system is plenty. I have a kit or 2 laying around in the 80amp range(twice as powerful) but more speed isn't really what this is about.

It can handle up to a 8000mah 2s lipo battery which is insane for runtime(about 30 min without stopping) 5000 is safer so it wont build heat. Buy the B6 cheap charger on amazon. It can charge every battery you can imagine including your car battery for $30. I use mine to charge my boat batteries. https://www.amazon.com/Hobby-Fans...131&sr=8-2

This is the CEN B50 and CEN H-150. Here's a review. https://www.bigsquidrc.com/review...er-trucks/

I also think the 2wd buggy could make a decent racer at your local track with some better tires and setup but like I said i'm not trying to go down that road. 2wd is more difficult to handle but it teaches the fundamentals. If they have metal gears in the diffs(I'll check) then they would also make great speed run vehicles with a powerful 3s brushless system.
You can get lipos on Amazon for ~$10 each (5200mah lipo) and a nicer charger for ~$25 (b6 charger)

Lipos perform much better than Nimh but they are more dangerous and prone to exploding if over-discharged. If going for lipos, you would want to teach your kids not to run the battery too low, or always supervise them when they are using it

I ended up getting a 4x4 Hooligan, and picked up a spare spur gear since that was only like $3 more.

I'd probably pass on the $50 2wds, but those 4wds are tempting... those are rebranded CEN HL150s

I'm looking at the 4 x 4 as an Xmas present for my kids. I see it doesn't come with a battery, is the Lipo 5000 battery worth the extra $20 over the NiMH 3000 battery? I'd assume so but I don't know anything about RC cars.

NiMH battery it is. I'm sure the battery will get run all the way down so I'll just get a couple of them so they can be swapped out. Appreciate the advice.

Keep in mind that one of the issues with CEN products is getting parts to fix them when they break and from what I have heard that will happen often, I would stick to name brands like Losi,Traxxas and so on.

Easier to source repair parts, and by the time you pickup a decent battery and charger the 50$ 2wd will be at 100 anyways.(when you factor in shipping) Thank you!

That thing is junk. Bottom of the barrel components. No wonder it is cheap and worst of all it is not cheap to repair.

Chinese RC are just fine and the prices for parts are good.

$99 and it comes with the worst servo you can buy and friction shocks.

I really don't know anything about RC cars, but my 7 year old son has several toy cars that are essentially crap as well as one car that gets some speed that he loves but it's a cheapie. For anyone who knows much about RC cars, is the Torch RC Monster Truck in this post decent? I want to upgrade what my son has and looks-wise he'd love this. I want to get him something an adult (me) would also enjoy using but I can't afford the ones for several hundred bucks at our local hobby shop.

Looks like it stripped out your URL so I'm not sure what you're directing me to look at.

I see the truck I'm looking at has a combo kit with battery and charger. You don't save any money on getting the combo over buying those items separately. Not sure if I could get anything better for less on Amazon that would work with this.
