I swear, when they come out with a newer version of this, no one will be able to get one for years.

Easiest the best streaming player in existence - and I've tried them all. Reliable, stable, consistent and still gets updates years later.

No HDR for YouTube and YouTube TV is the only drawback for me.

What do you mean no HDR? Doesn't this have HDR 1.1?

For some reason the HDR on YouTube app and YouTube TV app do not work on the shield. Well known issue for years. Other apps like Disney, HBO, Amazon all play HDR

YouTube uses a specific codec (VP9.2) for HDR content. I believe Apple TV 4K doesn't support YouTube HDR either. The 4K Firestick however does.

These things are 7 years old at this point. They have the same chip as the Nintendo Switch. There have been quite a few leaks about the chips Nvidia is making for the next Switch lately, and will probably release sometime next year. I imagine the new Shield won't release until after the Switch.
7 years? dude, its 3 years. educate yourself a bit - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvi...19_version

give youtube vanced a try. the install isn't a button-click, so wade in only if you have the stomach for it.

You can force the option to turn on/off with Vanced but since it's a hardware limitation it's probably not going to do any good. My guess is the next gen Shield will either support VP9.2 or both Shield and Youtube will have moved on to AV1 by then.

Yes nvidia are scum bag shitheads for putting ads on the home screen, and yes the hardware is old but it was very over-powered at launch, it can decode 4k60 x264 and x265 and all the 10bit HDR stuff right on the SoC.

If you're savvy you can roll back to 8.2.3 which is most people's favorite version as it didn't have ads on home screen as was all around stable for the most people. There's a very active subreddit with tons of guides to tweak this to your liking. Like the other user said, it's android so sky is the limit. It's also extremely handy for, ahem, free HD sports & event streams that may or may not be available through conventional paid means on your area. Lots of ways to skin that cat if you dig around a bit.

If you have your own local content on a NAS this is the defacto standard box you want to stream to via uPnP or SMB, I've tried many other product lines (Minix comes to mind), most of them have never ending firmware updates that never quite squash all bugs and then they get discontinued.

If you just stream crap from Hulu or Netflix or this all sounds like Chinese to you then yes maybe stick with firestick, this is more what you want for streaming & decoding high fidelity content on your local network.

I hate the ads/carousel and have done everything possible to try and remove them (and keep them gone). No dice. That said, it's not Nvidia that caused this, it's Google and the "Android 11.0 powered by Android TV". Nvidia had no choice but to adopt it if they wanted to offer OS upgrades.

I know it's super old, but isn't this like the only option for Dolby Vision in a streaming box?

Yeah you're right about the politics on that one. I also had same issue with ads, kept coming back for me, I gave up and just started using a different home launcher. You can also remap the buttons on the remote so that you can go home to the alternative launcher as well.

STube Beta is still updating but Vanced got sued and is no longer developing. STube is great with its skipping promotional spots and things like "Hit that thumbs up" but also has a hard time with HDR for some reason.

I have a 2015 Shield and it does 4K HDR content from Plex, Amazon Prime, and Netflix as well as Atmos 5.1, so personally not going to upgrade until they come out with the next version or this one dies.
