I would say for gaming any NVME PCIe drive will do, no specific need for TLC or DRAM.
I bet your son will hate an external drive to swap games, in the long run and too many games/backups, that may become a need as well...
But first of all, just make sure your computer has another M.2 slot available.
If not, I would go with a regular SSD drive, something like Crucial MX500 or BX500.

The NV2? The Kingston is in theory a better drive. 640TBW Toshiba TLC vs P3 440TBW Micron QLC (slower writes).

Who knows. That definitely is a problem with brands like Kingston, you never know what you're gonna get. I guess it might not even be Toshiba at any given time.

My understanding is that you won't know until you open the Kingston package.
Based on their description, all they will guarantee is that it meets the published specs.
For example, they'll meet the 640TBW.
I doubt their marketing materials will specifically call out QLV or TLC.

I'm guessing that unless I plan on upgrading next year, there is no advantage in "future-proofing" with a PCI gen 4 drive and this P3 should be enough for a games drive.
aka... But this and lunch vs the P3 Plus

Trying to figure out what to get my son for his computer. Bought him a computer a few months ago that came with 512 GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 Performance TLC. He wants more storage for games and wondering what kind of storage do I need, i.e. something like this, a 2.5 SSD or just an external storage device. Any info would be appreciated.

Sadly it seems like windows can't really take advantage of the M2 drives as you'd think.

An analogy I like, think of it as a super car (NVME) against a Ford Escort (Sata). But you're stuck in rush hour traffic.

A 2.5 ssd would be fine. External? Good for backups but I wouldn't game on one if I could help it.
